Dyneema for Modu Mooring Lines In Brazil
Brazilian oil giant Petrobras has specified ultra strong, lightweight Dyneema fibers for a complete set of mooring ropes for a semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit (MODU). Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Petrobras has substantial interests in deepwater exploration. Petrobras specifically asked for the ropes to be made with SK78 grade of UHMWPE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) fibers from DSM Dyneema for its high strength at low weight properties.

ClassNK Approves First Corrosion Resistant Steel
April 27 (Tokyo) - ClassNK announced today that it had issued the world’s first type approval for corrosion resistant steel to the new NSGP®-1 steel manufactured by Nippon Steel Corporation’s Oita Works . The approval certifies that the new steel, which has been specifically designed for application on the inner bottom of the cargo oil tanks of crude oil tanker, complies with the IMO’s new performance standard for corrosion resistant steels.
Jumbo Offshore to Install Protection Structures
In June 2011, Jumbo’s DP2 Offshore Heavy Lift Vessel Fairplayer will install 4 subsea protection structures for production flowlines at 600 m water depth in the Laggan & Tormore fields. These gas condensate fields, owned by Total and Dong Energy, are located 125 km north-west of the Shetland Islands. This region contains approx. 17% of the remaining UK oil and gas reserves. The subcontract, commissioned by client Allseas, will combine transport and installation, Jumbo Offshore’s hallmark.
Launch Of First Px106 In Brazil
The first of two platform supply vessels (PSVs) of the PX106 type design was successfully launched from Alianca shipyard in Brazil mid-April. The vessel is the first of four X-BOW® vessels for offshore shipowner CBO to be built at Alianca. After the launch, the superstructure was lifted onto the vessel and assembled in a smooth and problem-free operation. CBO (Compania Brasileira de Offshore) ordered two PX106 and two PX105 designs from ULSTEIN at the end of 2009.

April 25, 2011—The North American Marine Environmental Protection Association (NAMEPA) will present its Environmental Intelligence in Shipping Seminar Series in Seattle on May 25th at the Bell Harbor Conference Center beginning at noon with lunch. The seminar will explore many of the environmental issues facing the Port of Seattle in its centennial year, including air emissions, storm water runoff, marine life habitats, and lessons from the Deepwater Horizon incident.
HamiltonJets for Offshore Wind Farm Catamarans
HamiltonJet has been selected as the propulsion partner in three recent catamarans working in the offshore industry. In each case the combination of wide operating envelope, enhanced maneuverability and proven durable design were contributing factors in the selection of the propulsion and control package. The first of these vessels to be built was Windcat 21, constructed by A.F. Theriault & Son for the UK/Netherlands based Windcat Workboats.
Kvichak’s New Facility, Flashmark Tech
Kvichak Marine Industries, a Seattle workboat builder, was a recipient of an ARRA small shipyard grant awarded in August 2009. One of the improvements to Kvichak funded by this grant is a new state of the art cutting table and brake which the company has located into a newly leased facility located in the South Park area of Seattle. Flashmark Tech, a division of Kvichak Marine, is now in full production.
