Arctic Oil Exploration: Shell Awaits New Giant Icebreaker
The M/V Aiviq icebreaker, contracted by Shell Oil to support drilling in Alaskaās Chukchi Sea, is scheduled to be completed by Louisiana-based Edison Chouest Offshore in early 2012. The vessel, ordered in July 2009, is on track for April 1, 2012, delivery in Galliano, La., and will then head north, according to Shell Oil spokesman Curtis Smith. The $200m Aiviq is the largest vessel ever built by Chouest, and will be among the most advanced and powerful, non-military icebreakers on the waters.

24m Scientific Research Catamaran Launched
Incat Crowther announced the launch of VÄjÅ«nas, a 24m Catamaran Scientific Research Vessel built by Baltic Workboats in Estonia. Classed by DNV, VÄjÅ«nas has completed sea trials and has been delivered to Lithuaniaās Ministry of Environment for operation in the Baltic Sea. The vessel will monitor the Baltic Sea nearshore area and the Curonian Lagoon. The aft deck features lower platform access, hydraulic A-Frame, 6,4tm Fassi deck crane and moon pool.

As part of its upgrading program for its Europe India service, Rickmers-Linie, has added the 17,000dwt newbuilding Rickmers Tianjin to the schedule. The base ports served are Hamburg, Antwerp, Genoa, Mumbai and Chennai but the service is capable of serving a wide variety of additional ports on inducement. Statoil Makes Choices for Dagny, Eirin Fields
A fixed platform has been selected by Statoil and its partners for the Dagny oil and gas discovery in the North Sea, while the Eirin gas field is to be developed with a subsea solution. Gas from Dagny will be exported through a tie-back to the infrastructure on Sleipner East, while offshore loading into shuttle tankers is proposed for the oil. The seabed production installation on Eirin will be tied back to the planned Dagny platform.
