Crowley Sends Cargo Flow to Puerto Rico for Hurricane Relief
Crowley Maritime Corp. announced that it has established a flow of relief cargo into San Juan, Puerto Rico, following Hurricane Maria, the devastating Category 4 storm that made direct impact with the island on Wednesday. To make this possible, Crowley has four vessels loaded with a mix of relief and commercial cargo currently en route to the company’s Isla Grande terminal in San Juan, with two more scheduled to follow. These six vessels will begin entering the harbor as soon as the U.S.
Wiernicki Named Mass. Maritime’s Person of the Year
Christopher J. Wiernicki, Chairman, President and CEO of ABS, was recognized for his distinguished career of excellence, innovation and service to the maritime industries by the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) as this year’s recipient of the Maritime Person of the Year Award on September 21, 2017 in New York City. The honoree is presented with the Captain Emery Rice Medal and awarded annually to a civilian or military leader from around the globe.
Hasuly Joins The Shearer Group

Hasuly has recently joined TSGI as a naval architect. Yanmar Provides Green Power for New Trawler
Norway’s newest and largest factory stern trawler features an auxiliary engine package from Yanmar, based on two 6EY22ALW generating sets. The 81.2m long, 16.6m beam MV Granit was built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey to the Skipsteknisk ST-117 design for Austevoll Island-based Halstensen Granit AS. The ship, yard number NB1067, was handed over to the owner at the end of August 2017. MV Granit is equipped for both white fish and shrimp, with all catches processed on board.
Baltic Index Hits More Than 3-year High on Strong Capesize Rates
The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index, tracking rates for ships carrying dry bulk commodities, rose to its highest in three-and-a-half years on Friday, boosted by strong capesize rates. The overall index, which factors in rates for capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize shipping vessels, rose 32 points, or 2.18 percent, to end at 1,502 points, its highest since March 2014. The capesize index was up 199 points, or 6.75 percent, at 3,147 points, its highest level since November 2014.
Michelsson to Join Evac
Waste, wastewater and water management systems provider Evac has appointed Tomas Michelsson as the President, Offshore and Merchant business area, effective January 8, 2018. Michelsson will replace the former President, Claes Rudling, who has retired during the summer. Michelsson previously worked as the Vessel Type Responsible (VTR) Global Sales Manager, Ro-Pax and Yachts, ABB Marine, and as the Director, Marine and Offshore business unit, Marioff.
