Alaska Marine Lines Reduces Fuel Surcharge
Alaska Marine Lines, a marine transportation company providing barge service to and from Alaska and Hawaii, informs it has filed with the U.S. Surface Transportation Board to decrease the fuel surcharge from certain locations as a result of fluctuating fuel costs. Panama Canal Suspends Draft Restriction
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has lifted scheduled vessel draft restrictions brought on by lingering draught conditions in the region. The ACP had previously set restrictions of 11.89 meters Tropical Fresh Water (TFW) to take effect September 8 due to the effects of an El Niño climate phenomenon triggering a drought in the Canal Watershed, causing water levels of Gatun and Alhajuela Lakes to fall well below average.

An updated version of the “Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Selection Guide” is now available, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced today. Odfjell Reports Best Quarter Since 2008
In what it is calling its best quarterly performance since third quarter 2008, the Odfjell Group for the second quarter of 2015 reported net results of $7 million. The group, which transports and stores bulk liquid chemicals, acids, edible oils and other special products, said it saw steady general improvement in the chemical tanker market with improved earnings in the deep-sea segment as well as in the remaining regional operations.

Ulstein Verft Launches its Largest Ship to Date
On August25, shipbuilder Ulstein Verft launched from its dock hall a special offshore construction vessel, Yno 302, for Island Offshore and Edison Chouest Offshore. The newbuild measures close to 160 meters in length with at beam of 30 meters, making her the largest offshore vessel built at Ulstein Verft to date. A video of the launch is available here. According to the builder, the vessel’s total steel volume is about 8,800 metric tons – approximately the same as five platform supply vessels.

Vard to Build Gillnetter for Breivik AS
Norway-headquartered vessel designer and builder Vard Holdings Limited announced it has secured a NOK 60 million contract for the construction of a coastal fishing vessel for Norway’s Breivik AS. The new gillnetter vessel will be built at Vard Braila in Romania and is scheduled to be delivered during the third quarter of 2016, securing work for the yard in all stages of production. The vessel is of the Seacon SC34 design and is equipped with a factory and freezing plant, Vard said.
