DOF Installer Sells Offshore Vessel
DOF Subsea AS subsidiary, DOF Installer ASA, reported the sale of one of its three sister ships, an anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel, to an international buyer. According to the company, the sale will release approximately $1.7 million for the DOF Group after redemption of debt. Delivery to the new owners is expected late 2014.

Video: Containerships Collide in Suez Canal
Two large containerships collided in the Suez Canal off Port Said at roughly 5:30 local time Monday morning. The Hapag-Lloyd’s Colombo Express, a 324-meter German-flagged containership, collided with 332-meter Singapore-flagged Maersk Tanjong, causing several dropped containers and a large gash in the Colombo Express’ bow. Waterjets Manufacturing Comes Stateside
Thrustmaster’s deal with DOEN brings waterjet manufacturing to the United States. MARAD to Mark the Return of MV Cape Ray
Maritime (MARAD) Administrator Paul N. Jaenichen will host a ceremony on Friday, September 19, 2014 in Portsmouth, Va. to honor the civilian crew who helped to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons at sea aboard the MV Cape Ray. The MV Cape Ray, crewed by all-volunteer U.S. Merchant Mariners, supported an international effort with China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Russia and the U.K. to destroy Syrian chemical weapons and agents at sea.

Arctic Wreck Found after 169 Years
After more than 169 years, Canadian researchers discovered one of the two ships from the doomed Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin, cracking one of the largest mysteries in sea exploration. The wreck was found some 11 meters below the surface using a ROV recently acquired by Parks Canada. It is unknown whether the ship is HMS Erebus or HMS Terror, though researches expect to determine its identity within several days.

Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Mario Cordero will hold a forum titled, "U.S. Port Congestion: Examining Causes, Impact on Stakeholders, and Exploring Possible Solutions" on Monday, September 15, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Port of Los Angeles’ administration building in San Pedro, Calif. USCG Rescues Fisherman off Massachusetts
A fisherman was rescued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) after his 40-foot fishing vessel became caught in the surf on the Chatham Bar in Chatham, Massachusetts, Wednesday. USCG Watchstanders at Sector Southeast New England received a notification from a good Samaritan informing that the fishing vessel Never Enough was stuck in waves and needed assistance. Coast Guard Station Chatham rescue crews arrived on seen with two 42-foot fast response boats to assist.

HHI Unveils Automatic Painting Spray Head
Shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) announced today that it developed an automatic spray head for painting the bottom parts of ships. According to HHI, the automatic painting spray enables the paint to spread evenly across the surface saving 20% of the paint used compared with the manual painting method where painters have to bend their necks backwards and look up to paint the bottom of the ship.

Giant Reefer Ship Makes Maiden Call in Rotterdam
Hamburg Süd’s Cap San Lorenzo docked for the first time in the port of Rotterdam on Thursday, September 4. At the Euromax Terminal, the captain was presented with the traditional port plaque associated with a maiden call, in the presence of Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO Allard Castelein. The Cap San Lorenzo is the fourth containership in a series of six newbuild vessels for the shipping line. The ship, 333 meters long and 48 meters wide, has a capacity of 9,600 TEU.
