Global container shipping line Evergreen Marine Corporation has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with X-Press Feeders, the world’s largest independent common carrier, to place its containers on X-Press Feeders’ new dual fuel green methanol vessels. Singapore-based container shipper X-Press Feeders plans to use green methanol bunker to fuel part of its fleet in Europe in the second quarter of 2024, a senior executive said on Tuesday.The move comes as the European Union will extend its Emissions Trading System (ETS) next year to cover carbon dioxide emissions for all ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above entering EU ports.Shippers can buy carbon credits to offset emissions or burn lower-carbon fuels such as methanol and biofuels, although supply of these fuels is limited.

Container shippers are ordering vessels powered by methanol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it will take years for renewable methanol output to meet demand and for costs to fall, industry executives said.The first green methanol-fuelled container ship, owned by A.P. Moller-Maersk, sailed from South Korea in July. The number of such vessels is expected to exceed 200 by 2028, up from 30 this year, consultancy DNV forecasts.Container giants such as A.P. Maersk has taken delivery of the world’s first container feeder to be fueled by methanol.The 2,100 TEU vessel was built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and Hyundai Heavy Industries and features dual fuel main and auxiliary engines from MAN Energy Solutions that are able to operate on cleaner-burning methanol.The ABS-classed vessel, HMD Hull #4168, is embarking on its maiden voyage from Ulsan to Copenhagen for a naming ceremony in September, when the ships is expected to take the name Laura Maersk.

Denmark's Maersk said on Monday it has secured fuel for the first container vessel able to run on carbon-neutral methanol on its inaugural journey, from South Korea to Denmark.The 21,500 km long summer trip from Ulsan to Copenhagen will be fuelled by bio-methanol fuel produced from biogas captured from decomposing organic landfill waste. Singapore-headquartered shipping company Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) said on Friday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with OCI N.V. (OCI) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN) to develop methanol and ammonia as marine fuels to aide in industry-wide decarbonization and environmental preservation efforts.The partnership involves using select conventional vessels from EPS’ existing tanker fleet that use MAN engines to be retrofitted, allowing them to be powered by methanol and ammonia which will be supplied by OCI. Also, EPS will construct newbuild vessels with MAN engines powered by the same two alternative marine fuels. OCI intends to charter the first retrofitted vessel from EPS.The announcement is in line with EPS’ agnostic approach to its alternative marine fuel program.

General Dynamics has completed its acquisition of CSRA. The transaction is valued at approximately $9.7 billion. Swire Oilfield Services, a leading supplier of specialist offshore cargo carrying units (CCU), is defying market conditions by establishing Aberdeen, UK as a Centre of Excellence for its Cargo Carrying business with a $1.2m investment, creating five jobs. Work has already begun on the new paint curing facility at the company’s fleet refurbishment workshop in Aberdeen. The three acre site is scheduled for completion on the 1st of December and once fully operational, personnel including shot blasters and painters will be hired to service the new hub.

Supplier of specialist offshore cargo carrying units, Swire Oilfield Services, has announced the acquisition of the assets and operating business of Australia based Weir OCI, creating the largest regional supplier of offshore cargo carrying units (CCU) in the Australian and Asian region. Weir OCI is the company’s second Australian acquisition in the past year, and takes investment in the region to more than $25m. In August 2008 Swire Oilfield Services acquired Perth based Maritime Products & Services. The three companies together will now trade as Swire Oilfield Services Pty Ltd.
