Planned Renovations Key to North Carolina

By Larry Pearson The State of North Carolina has the nation's second largest ferry system. Only the State of Washington's system is larger. Its 23 vessels annually carry 2.5 million passengers and one million vehicles. The ferry system is operated by the Ferry Division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, which employs approximately 380 permanent employees. This number increase to approximately 450 during the summer season. There are four ferry routes on three bodies of water connecting the mainland with the offshore islands of Ocracoke, Hatteras and Notts Islands. Three routes cross the Cape Fear, Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. The Ferry Division also has a dredge, tugs, fuel barge and its own shipyard located in Manns Harbor. The shipyard maintains all Ferry Division vessels as well as performing major modifications and refits. Ferryboats are divided into three classes depending on the types of water in which they operate. The Hatteras Class of 11 vessels is used in the shallow waters and shoals of Hatteras Inlet. The five Sound Class ferries plies the more turbulent waters of Pamlico Sound and the River Class of seven boats are used on more protected river routes. Over the last 15 years, the State has built many ferries in Gulf Coast Shipyards including Patti Shipyard, Halter Marine, Houma Fabricators, Steiner Shipyard and Orange Shipbuilding.


Old Boats, New Beginnings

Today's commercial vessel owners are becoming increasingly creative in order to extend the life of existing vessels. Typically, a commercial steel hull can last for more than 50 years. However, rugged use may call for extensive repair of a vessel to keep it sailing. Market changes may demand that a vessel originally design for one mission is converted to a new and hopefully more profitable use. Most repair work done in shipyards is for five-year regulatory inspections to meet Coast Guard

Romanian Crew Detained for Months at Fourchon

10 Romanian crew members have been stuck on a docked ship in Port Fourchon for three months while the vessel's owner and operator unhurriedly attempt to fix safety problems. The Silver Star has been detained by the U.S. Coast Guard since Jan. 28 for deficiencies found during an inspection. The problems must be fixed before authorities will allow the crew and the ship to leave the port, said Lt. j.g. Paul Steiner, with the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit in Houma

Damen Seeks Remaining Shares In Romanian Shipyard

Dutch firm Damen Shipyards Group has announced plans to buy the remaining shares it does not already own in Romanian shipyard Santierul Naval Galati and to delist it from the RASDAQ over-the-counter market. Damen reportedly offered $612,400 for 5.107 percent in the shipyard. Last March, Damen Shipyards Group bought a 51 percent stake in the shipyard from the country's main privatization agency, the FPS. Last November, it acquired a further 43.89 percent at a public tender offer.


Bharati, Apeejay Form Shipbuilding JV

Bharati Shipyard Ltd. and unlisted Apeejay Shipping Ltd. said they would invest Rs 2,000 crore in an equal joint venture to set up a modern shipbuilding yard along India’s eastern coast, according to a Reuters report. While Indian shipbuilders are expanding their capacities with buyouts of other yards and assets, Indian shipping and engineering firms are planning to set up shipbuilding yards to exploit the sector’s surging potential.


Pearl Harbor Shipyard Wins Navy Safety Award

Winter announced Aug. 19 that Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard won the Department of the Navy's Fiscal Year 2008 Safety Excellence Award. This is the second consecutive year the shipyard earned the DON Safety Excellence Award. In 2007, the shipyard was recognized for achieving elite "Star" status under the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Programs

Channel Closure for Dead Ship Tow

There will be a dead ship tow of the Dive Support Vessel UNCLE JOHN from the Mobile Sea Buoy to BAE Shipyard starting at approximately 0600 today. The 253 feet long, 173 feet wide rig will be towed by the tugs FINN FALGOUT and WILKEN FALGOUT with assist tugs provided by Crescent Towing.
