Delivery Begins for HMS Prince of Wales Bridge

The bridge section of the U.K.’s second Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier has been loaded out of its dock hall in Glasgow ahead of its first sea voyage to Rosyth.   Upper Block 07 is where HMS Prince of Wales will be commanded atop the flight deck and is known as the Forward Island. As the main hub of the ship it contains the bridge and approximately 100 vital mission systems compartments.   The Forward Island has been under wraps in Govan since construction on the section began in December 2013, but it is now visible from the west end of Glasgow.    Mick Ord, Managing Director at BAE Systems Naval Ships, said, “This is a fantastic milestone for HMS Prince of Wales as its Forward Island is delivered ahead of schedule and to an exceptional standard of engineering. It’s a proud day for everyone on the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier program and an important reminder of their tremendous dedication and skill in naval engineering.”   A single remote control and 144 wheels were used to drive the 680-metric-ton Forward Island from inside the ship build hall to the dock side at a careful half a mile per hour.   The Forward Island will make another short journey tomorrow onto a waiting barge where it will remain on the Clyde until its departure from Glasgow next Friday, April 24.  


BAE Systems Restructures Naval Sector

BAE Systems has reached agreement in principle with HM Government on measures to enable the implementation of a restructuring of its U.K. naval ships business. The agreement will result in the restructuring of the contract for the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carrier program, provision of additional shipbuilding work prior to the start of the Type 26 Global Combat Ships program and rationalization of the U.K. naval ship business to match future capacity requirements.


CAE Awarded U.S. Navy Contracts

CAE has been selected to supply electric plant control systems for the largest and most advanced warship in naval history, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), as well as for the U.S. Navy’s latest LPD 17 class amphibious ship, the USS New York (LPD 21). The total value of these contracts is approximately C$12 million. CAE will provide prime contractor Northrop Grumman Newport News with computer-based control system technology for the USS George H.W. Bush


Final Section of BAE Aircraft Carrier Rolls onto the Clyde

The BAE Systems built Aft Island of the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier will be loaded onto a sea-going barge on June 11 before its journey from the company’s Scotstoun site to Rosyth. This is the last major section of the Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier and has been completed ahead of schedule by the team on the Clyde. The Aft Island is the Carrier’s air traffic control center. British Navy Looking to Preserve 'Illustrious' Legacy

Curtiss-Wright Awarded $14.6M in Contracts

Curtiss-Wright Corporation announced it has been awarded $14.6 million of contracts from Northrop Grumman Newport News to design and manufacture engineered pumps for use on the United States Navy's next generation CVN-21 Class aircraft carriers. The pumps will be manufactured by Curtiss-Wright's Flow Control segment located in Phillipsburg, NJ, and delivered in 2008 and 2009. Babcock to Support Aircraft Carrier Engineering
