Adapted ME-GI Gas Engine Runs on Hydrogen

MAN Energy Solutions’ licensee, MITSUI E&S Co. Ltd., has announced that it has successfully tested a 50-bore MAN B&W two-stroke engine up to 100% load at its Tamano facility while running on hydrogen, a world-first for the maritime industry.In collaboration with MAN Energy Solutions, MITSUI converted one of the four cylinders of an MAN B&W ME-GI (-Gas Injection) engine to hydrogen operation. World's Largest Cruise Ship Sets Sail, Bringing Concerns About Methane Emissions

The world's largest cruise ship is set for its maiden voyage on Saturday, but environmental groups are concerned that the liquefied natural gas-powered vessel - and other giant cruise liners to follow - will leak harmful methane into the atmosphere.Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas sets sail from Miami with capacity for 8,000 passengers across 20 decks, taking advantage of the surging popularity of cruises.The ship is built to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which burns more cleanly than traditional marine fuel but poses greater risks for methane emissions.

As the maritime industry embarks on 'the path to zero', it is widely acknowledged that there is currently not a 'silver bullet' solution, nor is it likely that a solution will emerge from a vaccum. Collaboration is the path forward, and efforts such as MethanQuest offer promise.The project MethanQuest was launched in September 2018 with 29 partners from research, industry and the energy sector to work on processes for producing hydrogen and methane from renewables and for using them to achieve climate-neutral mobility and power generation.

ME-GI Engine Sails Through Gas Trials

Alfa Laval, WinGD Partner Up to Improve Engine Efficiency on Gas-run Ships

Kawasaki Wins AiP for LNG Floating Power Plant

Japanese manufacturer of transportation equipment and machinery announced that it has obtained Approval in Principle (AiP) for its liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating power plant equipped with its own gas turbine (combined cycle power plant (CCPP) model).This approval was obtained from world-leading ship classification organization DNV GL based on its latest “Gas Power Plant” rules, which were introduced in 2018.An LNG floating power plant is an integrated system in which LNG fuel tanks, LNG regasification unit, power generation equipment and switchyard are all outfitted on the hull. The first Sayaringo STaGE type LNG carrierMitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MHIMSB) delivered the first Sayaringo STaGE type liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, named Diamond Gas Orchid in June, 2018. Gagarin Prospect Performs Ship-to-Ship LNG Bunkering

The large-capacity Aframax tanker "Gagarin Prospect", owned by Russia's SCF Group,  successfully implementated  construction and operation commencement  using LNG as the primary fuel.Konstantin G. Gazprom Neft, USC Join for LNG Project

Wärtsilä Rolls-out Pure Gas Marine Engine

Finnish corporation Wärtsilä has launched the 31SG pure gas engine for marine market applications.The 31SG is based on the successful Wärtsilä 31 product platform; the diesel version of the engine has been recognized by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient 4-stroke diesel engine.The Wärtsilä 31SG engine further reduces the total cost of ownership and the environmental footprint for vessels operating in regions where there is a developed gas infrastructure. Kongsberg Wins LNG, Battery Propulsion Contract

Kongsberg Maritime will supply a Power & Propulsion System for a new LNG powered multi-purpose cargo vessel of design MM85CC LNG by Multi Maritime.The clean and efficient Kongsberg Maritime propulsion system features a Bergen B36:45L6PG gas engine and LNG control and safety system, a Promas controllable pitch propeller and rudder system, together with a battery pack to enable periods of emission free operation in ports and environmentally sensitive areas.The 3,500dwt vessel is currently under construction at Tersan Shipyard, Turkey, for Norwegian ship owner Egil Ulvan Rederi AS.

MAN ES: New Low-Pressure, Two-Stroke, Gas Engine in the Works

MAN Energy Solutions Two-Stroke Business Unit  has initiated the development of a low-pressure gas engine as a supplement to its existing dual-fuel ME-GI engine.“We already offer the most sophisticated and technologically-advanced gas engine on the two-stroke market with our ME-GI type, and we are hungry for more," said Bjarne Foldager, SVP, Head of Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions. KHI Wins AiP from DNV GL for LFPP

The international accredited registrar and classification society DNV GL has awarded the Japanese multinational corporation Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) an Approval in Principle (AIP) for their LNG floating power plant (LFPP).The classification body said in a press release that the LFPP is a decentralized energy generation solution that enables locations to tap into natural gas as part of their power mix.The LFPP concept is designed for installation in areas where energy demand is rapidly increasing, but onshore infrastructure is not feasible or commercially viable. Instead, the LNG would be offloaded from a carrier, stored onboard in two cylindrical (IMO type C) tanks, and then regasified for power generation and exported to the onshore grid.

Rolls-Royce Unveils New Medium Speed V-Engines

Rolls-Royce has launched a V-line version of the new B33:45 liquid fuel and B36:45 gas engine series, completing the engine lineup following the launch of the first variants three years ago.The V-line will consist of 12-, 16- and 20-cylinder variants, while the inline platform is available in 6-, 8- and 9-cylinder. At 600 KW per cylinder the new engines offer a 20 percent increase in power per cylinder compared to their predecessors.
