Sail Freight: Fair Winds or Grassroot Sustainability?

(Photo: Hudson River Maritime Museum)

Climate change advocates and seafarers recently gathered for a small conference at the Hudson Valley Maritime Museum in Kingston, N.Y., to discuss the shipping industry’s struggle to achieve sustainability and environmental compliance. The setting, the hamlet of Rondout, N.Y. (within Kingston), holds significance as it was, ironically, a Hudson River port once considered the largest coal port in the world (yes, the world). In 1828, the opening of the Delaware and Hudson Canal enabled coal to be delivered from Pennsylvania to New York City.

New Container Spreader from Tandemloc

(Photo: Tandemloc)

For years mechanical container spreader frames have been a fixture on jobsites, river ports and any other location that utilizes ISO shipping containers. While container lifting frames are well worth their size and weight in operational cost savings, they often eat into those very savings because of the expensive shipping methods firms must utilize to get the frames on site for use. In response to this problem, Tandemloc has designed and fabricated the N3100SF Modular Autoloc Container Spreader for ISO Container Lifting.

Growth in the Leased Container Equipment Fleet to Slow

Following markedly slow growth of just 3.5% in 2015 due to decreased rental demand, the global leased container equipment operating fleet is forecast to increase by little more than 1% in 2016, according to the latest edition of the Container Leasing Industry Annual Report 2016, published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. By the end of 2015, leasing companies were again having to shift a sizeable factory stockpile, as well as contending with rental rates at an all-time low. New and used container prices had also fallen to their lowest in more than a decade because of weaker demand and a recent steep drop in the cost of steel and factory running costs.

One Small Step toward Sustainable Coastal Shipping

Short sea shipping is alive and well on America’s East Coast. In the United States, counties and states directly on the shoreline constitute less than 10 percent of the total land area (not including Alaska), but account for 39 percent of the total population. From 1970 to 2010, the population of these counties increased by almost 40 percent and are projected to increase by an additional 10 million people or 8 percent by 2020. Coastal areas are substantially more crowded than the U.S. as a whole, and population density in coastal areas will continue to increase in the future.
