GlobalSantaFe Orders New Ultra-Deepwater Drillship

GlobalSantaFe's new ultra-deepwater drillship, to be constructed in Ulsan, Korea, by Hyundai Heavy Industries for delivery in 2010. GlobalSantaFe Corporation has made an agreement with Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ltd. (HHI) to build a new ultra-deepwater exploration and development drillship for delivery in September 2010. Shipyard construction costs are expected to total approximately $740m. The drillship will be constructed in Ulsan, Korea, under a turnkey agreement, which provides that HHI will contract directly with equipment suppliers and deliver the drillship to GlobalSantaFe for a fixed price. The new vessel is an enhanced version of GlobalSantaFe's highly successful GSF C.R. Luigs and GSF Jack Ryan drillships, which entered service in 2000. Like those rigs, it will be capable of drilling in water depths up to 10,000 feet and is upgradeable to 12,000 ft. In addition, the new rig will feature advanced dynamic positioning capabilities, triple activity load paths, a derrick rated for 4 million pounds, dual liquid-storage systems, larger quarters and an efficient deck design that provides significantly more space than previous-generation drillships.


SHI South Korea Yard to Build Two Ultra-deep Drillships for Seadrill

Diamond Offshore Orders New Deepwater Rig from HHI

Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE:DO) today announced that a subsidiary, Diamond Offshore Drilling Limited, has entered into a turnkey contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for construction of a new ultra-deepwater drillship with delivery scheduled for late in the second quarter of 2013. Second Jack-up Rig Joins Maersk Drilling’s Fleet

ABS to Class Innovative Moss-type LNG Carriers

To be built in Ulsan, Korea, the ships will feature energy efficient reheated steam turbine engines. ABS, a provider of classification and technical services to the maritime industry, has been awarded a contract for the classification of two innovative 'Moss-type' LNG carriers to be built in Korea for Malaysia's Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas). The 150,200-m3 capacity ships will the largest Moss-type units ever built at Hyundai Heavy Industry's shipyard in Ulsan, Korea


HHI Builds Twin-Engine VLCC

Stena Vision, a unique VLCC built by Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) in that it features twin-engines and twin-propellers, was recently christened at the Ulsan Shipyard. Concordia Maritime AB's new ultra-large 315,000-dwt VLCC was christened by Mrs. Karen Fidler, wife of the president of Sunoco Inc., the company that chartered the VLCC. Oil Discovery in Brazil

A huge offshore oil discovery could raise Brazil's petroleum reserves by a whopping 40 percent and boost this country into the ranks of the world's major exporters, officials said according to an AP report. The government-run oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, said the new "ultra-deep" Tupi field could hold as much as 8 billion barrels of recoverable light crude, sending Petrobras shares soaring and prompting predictions that Brazil could join the world's "top 10" oil
