General Dynamics NASSCO, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) won a contract by the U.S. Navy for the maintenance, modernization and repair of USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) and USS James E. Williams (DDG 95). The contract for an initial $15.6 million includes options that, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to $753.8 million.Work will be performed in Norfolk, Virginia, and San Diego, California. If all options are exercised, work will continue through November 2030.

Portland, Ore.-based Vigor Marine has been awarded a contract for a 90-calendar day shipyard availability for a mid-term availability of Military Sealift Command’s hospital ship USNS Mercy (T-AH 19).The $20,187,816 firm-fixed-price contract includes a base period and options, which if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $20,915,538. Work will be performed in Portland, Ore., beginning January 16, 2023, and is expected to be completed by April 15, 2023.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District awarded a $3.85 million contract to Illinois-based Great Lakes Dock and Materials, L.L.C. on March 31 for repairs to the Rochester Harbor East Pier in Rochester, N.Y.Repairs will ensure the pier, along with its adjacent federal navigation channel, continue to provide safe passage and refuge for commercial and recreational vessels between the Genesee River, Lake Ontario and the rest of the Great Lakes.“The Port of Rochester…

United States Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay (WTGB-101), homeported in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., arrived at Great Lakes Shipyard for a drydock, inspection, maintenance and repair contract.The contract includes hull, propulsion and steering system inspections, as well as steel repairs, hull cleaning and painting. The 140-foot Bay-class icebreaking tug was hauled out on Friday, September 3 using the Shipyard’s new 900-ton Marine Travelift.The USCGC Katmai Bay serves throughout the entire Great Lakes system.

Portugal’s Navalrocha Shipyard reports that it is continuing its robust performance through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic with a steady pipeline of work through to 2024, with the first six months of 2021 including a series ofdrydock projects involving general cargo vessels, tugs, passenger ferries, bunker tankers, Ro-Ro Pax vessels, LPG carriers and cruise vessels.According to Navalrocha commercial director Sergio Rodrigues, order volumes are running ahead of each of the last three years…

The Watson-class vehicle cargo ship USNS Charlton (T-AKR-314) has arrived at Philly Shipyard for a scheduled repair program. The work scope is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.The USNS Charlton is one of Military Sealift Command’s (MSC) large, medium-speed, roll-on/roll-off ships. With a displacement of 69,000 tons and a length of 950 feet, the vessel carries prepositioned U.S. Army tanks, armored personnel carriers, tractor-trailers, and other equipment and supplies to potential areas of conflict around the world.

Charleston, S.C. repair yard Detyens Shipyards has been awarded a $24,235,291 firm-fixed-price contract for a 120-calendar day shipyard availability for the regular overhaul dry-docking of the U.S. Navy oiler USNS Patuxent (T-AO 201). Work is expected to be complete by October 2020.The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $27,416,444. Portugal’s Naval Rocha shipyard is reporting a surge in activity in the opening half of 2018 after delivering a series of drydock, wet basin and pier-side projects.Naval Rocha commercial director Sergio Rodrigues said the yard located in the heart of Lisbon Harbour on the north bank of the River Tagus has completed a wide variety of repair and conversion projects.Key work has involved containers, cruise, passenger and sailing ships, cargo and research survey vessels, naval ships, anchor handing tugs, supply vessels and dredgers.“Naval Rocha is a unique, modern shipyard,” said Mr Rodrigues. “We are located in a prime position in the centre of a European capital city which enjoys 300 days of sunshine a year.

The total volume of cargo tranported by sea in Brazil from January to September 2017 was pegged at 800 million tons, according to a survey by the National Agency of Waterway Transportation (Antaq). A large number of oceangoing and cabotage ships are needed to move such a volme and many of these ships will need repairs of various kinds. Having identified a positive demand for international standard ship repair facilities in the South Atlantic basin, McQuilling Services, headquartered in New York, will be leading a project to invest nearly a billion in Lucena, on the coast of the northeast state of Paraíba, for the installation of the Brazil Basin Drydock Company (BBDC) repair yard projects.

Vigor Marine LLC, Portland, Oregon, is being awarded a $19,629,518 firm-fixed-price contract to prepare for and accomplish repair and alteration requirements for USS Kidd (DDG 100) Chief of Naval Operations scheduled, selected restricted availability (SRA) in support of the DDG-51-class destroyer ship repair program. For U.S. Naval Surface Combatants – typical repair and maintenance work to be performed in SRA includes modernization ship alterations; blasting, painting and surface preparation for complete or touch-up preservation, freeboard, struts, rudders, running gear, ground tackle, and sea-chest; hull, mechanical and electrical; various interior tanks. Work will be performed in Everett, Washington, and is expected to be completed by September, 2018.

Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet informs it has won a contract for the refit and repair works of a Swedish ferry from Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration). Awarded after a public tender process, the contract refers to the Castella, a 77-meter-long Ro-Ro ferry. Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, will complete the works between November 2017 and March 2018. Trafikverket, the Swedish governmental body responsible for national infrastructure, operates more than 40 different ferry routes that mobilize more than 60 ferries.

After having been informed by the NGO Shipbreaking Platform and its member organisation Bellona that the Tide Carrier (now named HARRIER, aka EIDE CARRIER) had been sold for illegal, dirty and dangerous scrapping to a South Asian beaching facility, the Norwegian environmental authorities arrested the ship on Tuesday 5 April. The vessel is not allowed to leave Norway unless it is to sail to a ship recycling destination in line with international and European hazardous waste laws. According to the Norwegian Environment Agency, it is the first arrest of a vessel in Norway for the illegal export of hazardous waste. The Platform had been informed already during the summer of 2015 that the ship was sold for scrap.

Netherlands-based Sea Trucks Group (STG) said it has secured a contract award from an oil major in West Africa. STG was awarded an inspection, maintenance and repair contract for anoil major in West Africa with commencement during Q4 2016. Graeme Pennycook, Sea Trucks Group’s Managing Director, commented, “We are delighted that, in the present difficult market, Sea Trucks has been awarded this significant contract. Great Lakes Shipyard announced it has completed a multi-vessel drydocking and repair contract for the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Detroit District Floating Plant, and all vessels were redelivered on December 28, 2015. This was the first time the Detroit District Floating Plant has been drydocked using Great Lakes Shipyard’s 700 metric ton capacity Marine Travelift. The shipyard hauled out Tug Demolen and Deck Scow BC-6576 on October 26, 2015 and Crane Barge Veler on October 27, 2015.

A surge in bookings by new and repeat customers into the first two quarters of 2016 suggest the strong performance registered by Gibdock in 2015 will continue next year. The Gibraltar-based repair and conversion yard enters its customary busy ferry season buoyed by repeat business from owners of a variety of ship types, and the completion of its first exhaust gas scrubber installation project. Dock 1, Gibdock’s largest drydock, is already fully booked until the end of February 2016. Customers new to Gibdock in 2015 are returning. Peter Döhle Schiffahrts recently followed up on its inaugural docking of the 1,730TEU capacity containership Amanda by booking two more - Cecilia and Xian.

IHC Services, a subsidiary of Dutch shipbuilder and repairer Royal IHC, informs it has secured an order for a renovation project for a dredging vessel owned by Huta Marine Works Ltd in Saudi Arabia. The contract calls for work on the HUTA 14 self-propelled cutter suction dredger (SPCSD) to be carried out by IHC Middle East based in Dubai and the Service Operations department in The Netherlands for a renovation that involves the replacement of three large diesel engines, as well as the electrical installation for the underwater pump drive.

Detyens Shipyards, Inc. has been awarded a $15,812,647 firm-fixed-price contract from the U. S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command for a 75-calendar day shipyard availability for the regular overhaul and drydocking of USNS Lewis and Clark (T-AKE 1). Work will include bridge equipment annual service, main diesel generator overhaul, life raft annual certification, drydocking, propeller shaft inspection, underwater hull cleaning and painting, freeboard cleaning and painting, overhaul sea valves, blast and coat tanks and renew flight deck non-skid.

Great Lakes Shipyard has been awarded a drydocking contract for Miller Boat Line’s M/V Put-In-Bay. The ferry was hauled out using the 770-ton capacity Marine Travelift at Great Lakes Shipyard. The repair contract includes drydocking, inspection and repairs, hull cleaning and miscellaneous fabrication and steel repairs. This is the first drydocking for M/V Put-In-Bay at Great Lakes Shipyard since Spring 2010, when Great Lakes Shipyard completed reconstruction work including fabrication and installation of a 40-foot mid-body extension and main engine repowering.

US Department of Defense informs BAE Systems Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, is being awarded a not-to-exceed $22,905,907 undefinitized contract action to a previously awarded contract (N00024-14-C-4412) for repair and alteration of USS Hopper (DDG-90). DoD explains that USS Hopper will be undergoing a selected restricted availability which is the opportunity in the ship's life cycle to primarily conduct repair and alteration to systems and hull. Work will be performed in Honolulu, Hawaii, and will be completed by October 2014. Fiscal 2014 operations and maintenance (Navy) funds in the amount of $17,179,430 will be obligated at time of award and will expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

Great Lakes Shipyard has been awarded a contract for routine drydocking of the M/V Nautica Queen. The cruise vessel was hauled out using the 770-ton capacity Marine Travelift at Great Lakes Shipyard on Monday, November 10, 2014. The repair contract includes drydocking, USCG inspection and repairs, hull cleaning and painting, as well as miscellaneous steel repairs. The Nautica Queen offers cruises along Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio providing views of historic architecture and the ever-changing skyline of Downtown Cleveland.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Buffalo District has awarded a repair contract to Great Lakes Shipyard for two tugs and two barges from the Corps’ Cleveland Field Station. The shipyard said it has been contracted to perform drydocking, maintenance and repairs of the 109-foot Tug Cheraw and 53-foot Tug Donlon, and the 120-foot Deck Barges BD-6259 and BC-6472.
