Possible Support for Riverboat Gaming

Illinois Gov. George Ryan signaled he may be willing to support the transfer of a dormant riverboat gaming license to Cook County, despite campaigning against the idea last year. While not explicitly endorsing a specific casino site, he acknowledged without the crucial support of legislators who want riverboat gaming in the county, no gambling package could move forward in the Illinois General Assembly. Cook County is the only Illinois county prohibited by law from having a riverboat casino. Rosemont Mayor Donald Stephens is pushing for a riverboat there, and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley has endorsed Stephens' bid for a casino. Daley said he is not interested in bringing riverboat gambling to Chicago, but if Rosemont wants the dormant Silver Eagle license, he won't raise objections

Former Louisiana Governor Indicted

Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards and his son were indicted on federal charges in connection with a riverboat casino corruption investigation. Also charged in the case were three Edwards associates and a state senator. Edwards was charged with 30 counts, including racketeering, extortion, conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and illegal wiretapping, in connection with extracting money from applicants for riverboat casino licenses, or, in the case of the wiretapping

Riverboat Casino Ratings Bouyed by Regulations, Demand, Moody's Says

The operators of many of the riverboat casinos along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers are likely to enjoy smooth sailing as growing demand, limited new supply, and relaxed regulations support stronger operating results and possibly rating upgrades, Moody's Investors Service reports. LEEVAC Wins $40M Casino Boat Contract

Leevac Industries, LLC of Jennings, La., won a $40 million contract from PNK (Lake Charles), LLC for the construction of a 330 x 225 x 13-ft. (100.5 x 68.5 x 3.9 m) Paddlewheel Casino Vessel. Lay, Pittman and Associates, Inc. of Jacksonville, Fla., are the naval architects. The casino vessel will hold more than 1,500 slot machines and 60 table games and will be moored in Lake Charles, La. This vessel will be the largest riverboat casino built in the State of Louisiana.

American Cruise Lines Orders Four New Ships

Four new ACL Vessels to Enter Service between 2015 & 2017 and to Operate on U.S. Rivers American Cruise Lines announced plans to build four new riverboats for American river cruising, and noted that construction has already begun on the first two ships, with the first to begin cruising in in the spring of 2015. The first two new riverboats are designed to carry between 150 and 200 guests and will cruise the Mississippi River system and the Columbia and Snake Rivers

Proposed Fee Reduction

H.B. 168, sponsored by Rep. John Alario (D-Jefferson), would reduce the fees for renewal of riverboat gaming employee permits from $100 to $25 in Louisiana. The measure is pending in the Administration of Criminal Justice Committee.

  Port of New Orleans cruise terminals handled more than 1-million passengers in 2015, totaling 1,023,700, up 1 percent compared to 2014. The total marks the fifth consecutive record year and with new and larger ships on tap for 2016, Port officials expect another robust cruise season.

Salvors to Remove Fuel from Capsized Riverboat
