ABB's Batteries for KNOT Shuttle Tankers

ABB has won a contract to equip KNOT's shuttle tankers with battery technology and other electric solutions, with the aim of making the vessels fuel-efficient and reducing emissions. Once complete, the shuttle tankers will go on a charter with Norwegian oil company Var Energi.Under the contract awarded by the South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, ABB Marine & Ports will deliver the power and control technology for the two new KNOT shuttle tankers.ABB’s scope of supply will also include the shaft generator system…

IMO Urges GHG Reduction

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim has called for Member States and the entire maritime sector including shipping and ports, to come on board to achieve the ambitions set out in the historic IMO initial strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, adopted last year.The UN body said that the strategy makes a firm commitment to a complete phase out of GHG emissions from ships, a specific linkage to the Paris Agreement and a series of clear levels of ambition, including at least a 50 per cent cut in emissions from the sector by 2050.“We need to focus on technology transfer and research and development…

U.S. Navy Wants New Ideas to Save Energy

Energy Dashboard to Reduce Fuel Consumption

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) installed the Energy Dashboard proof-of-concept system in USS Kidd (DDG 100), April 2. Energy Dashboard is one of several shipboard energy efficiency initiatives that provides Sailors with a real-time assessment of energy usage and recommended actions to reduce fuel and electrical power consumption."Energy Dashboard is similar to the systems in today's newer vehicles that show drivers their instantaneous miles per gallon, allowing drivers to modify their driving behaviors to maximize fuel efficiency," said Glen Sturtevant, Team Ships director for Science and Technology. Conference Tackles Impact of Shipping on the Environment

Szczecin, Poland  - The challenges of preparing to meet the next generation of shipping regulations were very much on the minds of the participants at Germanischer Lloyd's (GL) latest exchange forum in Szczecin, Poland. Reducing the impact of global shipping on the environment and making improvements in efficiency are the focus of looming legislation which, over the next few years, seems certain to change the maritime landscape. More than 40 representatives from the maritime industry, shipping companies, ship management agencies, maritime journalists and stakeholders met to hear presentations from GL experts and discuss how the incoming regulations would impact upon the industry.

BV Completes first Energy Management Systems Audit

Bureau Veritas has completed the first certification audit of any shipping company in the world  to the new standard ISO 50001- 2011 - Energy Management Systems. Stena’s ship management division,  Northern Marine Management Ltd including  Northern Marine Management (USA) LLC,  has achieved certification to BS ISO 50001, which ensures systematic monitoring and control of energy usage, helping to optimise efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, reduce the company’s environmental footprint and provide a cost saving for the vessels owners.

Navy Energy Conservation Open BAA Released

The , Carderock Division (NSWCCD) has issued a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) discussing Energy Conservation Applications for the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC) Combat Logistics Force, Auxiliaries and Sealift ships. The BAA solicits innovative concepts for Navy shipboard energy conservation and carbon footprint reduction with the potential for rapid transition to Fleet operation.  The solicitation is BAA number N00167-11-BAA-01.  The Energy Conservation BAA will be open for two years and white papers may be submitted any time throughout the period beginning 1 December 2010 and ending 31 October 2012.  This BAA, more information and directions for submitting white papers to NSWCCD can be found at http://www.navsea.navy.mil/nswc/carderock/pub/business/baa.aspx.

NAVSEA Increases Wasp-class Fuel Efficiency

The U.S. Navy began installing combustion trim loop systems this month on amphibious ships to improve fuel efficiency and save up to 2,400 barrels of fuel per ship annually. The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) tested system, coupled with a new stack gas analyzer, automatically optimizes the fuel-air mixture for the ships' two boilers, making them more efficient. The trim loop system also protects the environment and increases crew safety by automatically preventing black or white smoke conditions. This initiative, part of NAVSEA's Fleet Readiness Research & Development Program (FRR&DP), supports the secretary of the Navy's efforts to reduce total energy consumption on naval ships.

Navy Solicits Energy Conservation Proposals

Costa Cruises Invests $28m in Fleet

Costa Cruises, a tourism group based in Italy, announced that in the space of three months five Costa ships were dry-docked to carry out scheduled maintenance. Costa Cruises has invested around $28m in this planned maintenance work. Operations were carried out on the Costa Serena, the Costa Europa, the Costa Atlantica (in Palermo), the Costa Romantica (in Genoa) and the Costa Concordia (in Trieste) from the end of October 2008 to the end of January 2009. In particular, the Costa Serena (114,500 gross tonnage and guest capacity of 3780), the company’s flagship, was the last Costa ship to be dry-docked from 28 January to 11 February 2009 in Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard. Two of the key improvements being made on the Costa Serena are specific shipboard energy and fuel-saving measures.

Navy, Marine Corps Garner Energy Awards

Seventeen Navy and Marine Corps Energy Teams and an individual energy manager have been singled out for conserving energy, saving money and avoiding pollution in FY2001. The Navy's Shipboard Energy Conservation Team (ENCON) is the winner of a rare Presidential Award. The award winners represent Navy activities, ships and Marine Corps bases. Their efforts avoided the consumption of many thousands of MBtus of electricity, gallons of fuel, and tons of pollution, easing the strain on natural resources and demand for new power plants.
