Intertanko discussed with the EU and supported at IMO a revised phase-out scheme which effectively brought the European proposal in line with OPA 90. A copy of Intertanko’s submission to MEPC 45 is available on on request.
While Intertanko appreciates that IMO has also taken steps to consider other items regarding safety of tankers, such as easy access for inspections, port of refuge, effects of heated high-density oil
on the structure of the ship,
it is disappointed that IMO did not entirely address the issues of accident investigation. It is our firm belief that the best method to decide and develop appropriate and corrective action is to undertake thorough and professional investigation of tanker accidents.
