Charles Arkinstall, a 21-year veteran of P&O Princess Cruises, has been named senior vice president of maritime affairs for Carnival Corporation & plc. In this capacity, Arkinstall will head up the newly created corporate maritime affairs department, responsible for establishing and promoting fleetwide safety, health and security policies for Carnival Corporation & plc's 13 global cruise brands. He will also work closely with the company's environmental compliance division in developing corporate-wide environmental policies. Arkinstall will also serve as Carnival Corporation & plc's representative for various cruise industry organizations and act as a liaison with the company's brands regarding new regulations and developments related to safety, health and security. Arkinstall will be based in Southampton, England, and report directly to Carnival Corporation & plc's Vice Chairman Howard Frank. "Charles is an excellent choice to oversee our new maritime affairs division. He possesses wide-ranging expertise in many aspects of the cruise industry and will be a tremendous asset in this new position," Frank said. Previously, Arkinstall had overall responsibility for P&O Princess Cruises' multi-billion-dollar newbuilding program, a position he held since 1982. In addition to overseeing the design and construction of P&O Princess Cruises' newbuilds, Arkinstall was responsible for establishing and maintaining fleetwide safety, health, environmental and security policies and standards, as well as technical operations. A naval architect with more than 40 years of shipping and shipbuilding experience, Arkinstall earned his degree in naval architecture from England's University of Newcastle.
