Shaver Taps Sundial For New Barges

Sundial Marine Construction and Repair, Inc., of Troutdale, Ore., signed a contract to build two new grain barges for Shaver Transportation Co.

The Shaver barges will be 273 x 42 ft. wide, and are designed to carry 120,000 bushels of grain on the Columbia River inland waterway system. The barges were designed by J. Cameron McKernon Company for Shaver Transportation. Sundial Marine will work closely with Far West Steel to complete the team approach to this project. The barges for Shaver are due to be completed within the fourth quarter of 2001. This marks Sundial's return to the new construction marketplace after an idle period of several years since the last grain barges were built by Sundial. It also allows Sundial to increase our labor force and incorporate new techniques and processes,according to Sundial Marine General Manager, Don Nugent. Sundial Marine is a full service shipyard located on the Columbia River, approximately 20 miles east of Portland, Ore., organized primarily for the purpose of providing quality ship and vessel repair, conversion and new construction. The company started in business 27 years ago, mainly as a marine construction yard, supplying the Columbia River basin with grain and petroleum barges, and new tugs and fishing vessels.

As the company has expanded, it has undertaken the repair and conversions of various sized vessels, from 60 ft. tugboats, up to 300 ft. barges. Sundial Marine's current marketing program includes construction and repair of Pacific Northwest barges, tugs, fishing vessels and various government vessels.
