Dominis Engineering Wins Contract

Wednesday, October 22, 2003
Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) has awarded a multi-year contract for the manufacture and supply of propeller blades for the Canadian Patrol Frigates (CPF) to Dominis Engineering Ltd. of Ottawa. The contract calls for the supply of two ship-sets, with an option for the third set, for a total of 30 propeller blades. Dominis IPMS (Integrated Propeller Manufacturing System) uses the company's proprietary technology for CNC milling of sculptured surfaces to final form. This manufacturing system is used in the production of propeller blades, monoblock propellers, hydraulic turbines, turbine blades and impellers. The Dominis system has the capability to mill under computer control an entire part, including inlet and outlet edges, variable radius fillets, overhangs and palms for Kaplan blades and propellers blades. Dominis Engineering specializes in the precision, 5-axis machining of medium to large propellers, turbine blades and other complex parts containing sculptured surfaces. The company has developed proprietary technology and a CAD/CAM system for the design, measurement and CNC milling of sculptured surface parts, such as propellers and turbine blades to final form. This technology has already been applied to manufacturing of propellers for Canadian Coast Guard, propellers for US Coast Guard, hydro turbine blades for VATECH Escher Wyss and Alstom, and pump blades for Ingersoll-Dresser. Canadian Patrol Frigates are state of the art Canadian built naval vessels. A total of 12 frigates were built in the 1980's and 1990's by the Saint John Shipbuilding Limited in Saint John, N.B. Several of these vessels have been on duty in Afghanistan and in the Persian Gulf.
