Christening of AIDAluna in Palma de Majorca

Monday, April 13, 2009

Since the night of April 4, the newest ship of the AIDA fleet officially bears the name AIDAluna. At exactly 10:18 PM, international top model Franziska Knuppe smashed the champagne bottle across the bow and enunciated the talismanic christening words. About 2,100 guests celebrated a high-spirited party on board the new ship, enjoying tepid spring temperatures and the shining moon. The christening was topped off by gigantic fireworks that illuminated the night sky.

After the ceremony, Franziska Knuppe handed over the bottle neck to Lutz Leitzsch, captain of AIDAluna. According to old traditions, the neck will be framed and placed onto the bridge as a lucky charm.

For the first time ever, the naming ceremony took place on board an AIDA ship. The whole vessel had been turned into a huge stage. The christening act and the fireworks were embedded into the entertainment program including comedian Kaya Yanar and singer Loona.
Internet users also enjoyed the premiere: For the first time, a ship christening was broadcasted live via satellite and twitter. More than 12,000 viewers watched the board program.

The newly christened ship left the port of Palma heading to Hamburg where it enters port on 18 April. Afterwards the journey continues to a first call in Kiel on 22 April, and to Rostock-Warnemünde where AIDAluna moores for the first time on 8 May. There will be all-together 10 roundtrips in the Baltic Sea during summer. In September, AIDAluna will change to the Canary Islands.
