Crowley Maritime Corporation’s 2016 Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarships are helping to further educational opportunities for three students of Texas A&M University, all of whom are enrolled in the college’s License Option program and have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in the towing or petroleum shipping industry after graduation. The three recipients, each of whom have either sailed with Crowley or are scheduled to do so, were chosen based on their demonstrated leadership skills and financial need. The awardees are Texas natives Bradley Schein from Houston and Baylor Nix from Austin along with Benjamin Miner from San Martin, Calif.

Jamaica is embarking on a country-wide survey of all the commercial and domestic vessels in its waters to ensure it has accurate data on its maritime community. The Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ), as Jamaica’s marine administration, has among its roles, obligations to provide for maritime safety and protection of the marine environment from potential damage caused by maritime activities which are on the increase in Jamaica’s waters. To more effectively carry out this mandate, during the months of December 2013 to May 2014, the MAJ will embark on a project to conduct island-wide surveys of all vessels domiciled in Jamaican waters in an effort to maintain an accurate account of the numbers and types of vessels using its waters for both commercial and personal purposes.

ITI GmbH today announced that for the first time a marine application of the interdisciplinary simulation software SimulationX has passed Germanischer Lloyd’s (GL) type approval certification. The SimulationX software module marine propeller for the calculation of ice impact induced loads on the powertrain was designed and developed by ITI in collaboration with GL in accordance with the specifications laid down by GL, the Finnish-Swedish Maritime Administration and the IACS. The software certification conducted by GL proves the software’s high quality standards and is evidence of ITI’s commitment to safe, reliable and energy efficient ship propulsion systems.

ClassNK announced that it has signed an agreement with the Government of Myanmar granting ClassNK authorization to carry out statutory surveys on its behalf. The signing ceremony took place in the Park Royal Hotel in Yangon on April 26, 2013, with Director General of the Department of Marine Administration Mr. Maung Maung Oo signing on behalf of the Government of Myanmar. ClassNK has been carrying out surveys for Myanmar-flagged vessels for various international conventions since receiving Recognized Organization status from the Government of Myanmar in 1986.

The UK Environment Agency (EA) has issued a modification to the waste management license of Able UK such that the company may engage in the dismantling of U.S. ships at its Teesside Reclamation and Recycling Centre. Able UK submitted an application to the Agency on July 31, 2003 to modify the existing licence for its Teesside Reclamation and Recycling Centre (TERRC) site, to permit an increase in its handling capacity from 24,500 to more than 75,000 tonnes per year. In issuing the licence the Agency has restricted the annual amount handled to 200,000 tonnes. The Agency granted the modification after it had undertaken a thorough assessment reviewing all the potential environmental risks to the Tees Estuary and the surrounding sensitive habitat sites.

The Queen of Victoria has been sold to a private operator in the Dominican Republic, BC Ferries' president and CEO Bob Lingwood announced. A total of six bids were received for the 38-year-old ferry and evaluated during the public bid process. "We've accepted an offer of $550,000 Canadian for the Queen of Victoria, which has become surplus to our needs," said Lingwood. R & G Importadora & Exportadora, the new owner, is expected to take possession of the vessel by the end of the year. The Queen of Victoria was built at the Victoria Machinery Depot in 1962 and provided ferry service on BC Ferries' Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay route until 1998. Since then, the vessel has been used for storage at the corporation's Deas Dock refit complex in Richmond.
