Coast Guard - Mel Oliver Capt. to Testify

U.S Coast Guard will resume its public hearing regarding the collision on the Mississippi River that occurred July 23, 2008, between the motor vessel Tintomara and the DM932 barge and the towing vessel Mel Oliver. The hearing will resume on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at 9:00 a.m. at the U.S. Federal Courthouse, 5th Floor, Courtroom C-501, Hale Boggs Federal Building, 500 Poydras Street, New Orleans, La. 70130. The Captain of the Mel Oliver is scheduled to testify during this hearing.

NOAA Team Assesses Debris Impacts in Gulf Region

NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration and Office of Coast Survey, working with the U.S. Coast Guard and other federal and state agencies, are assisting with Gulf of Mexico recovery efforts by performing hydrographic surveys and risk assessments of underwater debris left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The mapping aspect of the project will aid in the risk assessment and prioritization of the removal of debris to restore safe navigation and re-establish commercial fishing in the regions. Eighth Coast Guard District Returns to NOLA

More than 150 members of the Eighth Coast Guard District staff returned to their headquarters here today after they relocated to St. Louis more than two months ago due to Hurricane Katrina. Located in the Hale Boggs Federal Building on Poydras Street, the Eighth District staff oversees the command and control duties for the Coast Guard's Eighth District, an area that covers all or part of 26 states and is the largest district in the Coast Guard. In accordance with the district's continuity of operations (COOP) plan, about 50 of the members of the Eighth District staff began deploying to St. Louis on Aug. 27, prior to Hurricane Katrina's landfall. Boggs Named Carnival Conquest Godmother

Corrine "Lindy" Clairborne Boggs, former U.S. representative from Louisiana, is to serve as godmother of Carnival Cruise Lines' newest ship, Carnival Conquest, at the official naming ceremony slated for November 19, 2002, in New Orleans. The Carnival Conquest will be the line's first vessel inaugurated at the Port of New Orleans, where the ship will be based year-round. Boggs will name the ship by breaking the traditional bottle of champagne against the hull in a special ceremony at the port. The 110,000 gross-registered-ton, 2,974-passenger Carnival Conquest will be the largest "Fun Ship" in Carnival's 18-vessel fleet.
