WCI's Toohey Announces Retirement

Waterways Council, Inc. (WCI) President and CEO Michael J. Toohey has revealed plans to retire, the group announced to its Board of Directors and members at its meeting in Washington, DC on Wednesday.“Having turned 71 this month, I believe it is time to focus on my faith, family, my golf handicap and my other interests,” Toohey said. “I remain committed to WCI’s continued achievement now and in the future once a successor is named.”WCI’s Executive Committee will select an executive search firm to begin the process to seek a successor.

Mike Toohey Named President and CEO of WCI

Today, Waterways Council, Inc.’s (WCI) Board of Directors unanimously elected Mike Toohey as the organization’s President and Chief Executive Officer. Toohey will assume his duties effective August 14. With more than 30 years of federal government expertise, Toohey most recently served as Consultant with The Livingston Group’s Transportation, Shipbuilding, Shipping and Ports practice area. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Government Affairs for Ashland Inc., a chemical, energy and construction company.

Ashland Sells Drew Marine

Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH) completed the sale of its global marine services business, known for many years as Drew Marine, to J. F. Lehman & Co. for approximately $120m before tax. Ashland will use the net proceeds to reduce debt. With revenues of approximately $140m a year, the Drew Marine business has approximately 325 employees, 28 offices and 98 stocking locations in 47 countries. The business is a recognized global leader in providing technical solutions, high-value products and services to the global marine industry. Ashland and J.F. Lehman & Co. expect to produce a smooth transition with no disruption in customer service or supply. Ashland to Sell its Marine Services Business

On June 22 Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH) announced it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its global marine services business, known for many years as Drew Marine, to J. F. Lehman & Co. in a transaction valued at approximately $120m before tax. Ashland’s after-tax proceeds will be used to reduce debt. “This transaction will be a win for all parties,” said James J. O’Brien, Ashland chairman and chief executive officer. “For Ashland, this reflects our strategy to strengthen our core specialty chemical businesses while reducing our investment in non-core or non-strategic businesses. For J. F. Lehman & Co., the acquisition of Drew Marine represents an opportunity to acquire a leading global brand with strong market positions and prospects for growth.

Brinson Elected Chairman of National Waterways Conference

J. Ron Brinson, former port director and now special projects coordinator of the Port of New Orleans, was elected chairman of the National Waterways Conference, Inc., at the organization?s annual meeting. Brinson succeeds Craig E. Philip of Nashville, president and chief executive officer of Ingram Barge Co., who had served as chairman for the last two years. Brinson, who served as president and chief executive officer of the Port of New Orleans from 1986, now heads the millennium port and other special projects. He previously served seven years as president of the American Association of Port Authorities. He also worked for the South Carolina State Ports Authority and as a reporter and later associate editor of The Charleston News and Courier.

Ashland Names Piiroinen to European Marine Manager

Olli Piiroinen has been named industry manager for the European marine market within Ashland Composite Polymers, a business group of Ashland Performance Materials, a division of Ashland Inc. Piiroinen will manage Ashland’s composite marine business for Europe. Previously he was Ashland’s technical service representative for composite marine products in Europe. “Olli’s technical expertise, coupled with his broad knowledge of the European marine manufacturing market, will enable Ashland to expand upon our successful efforts in this market space,” said Mike Wallenhorst, global marine marketing manager for Ashland Composite Polymers. Ashland Composite Polymers is a leader in supplying products, processes and technologies to the global marketplace for composites and gelcoats.

Treon Named Marketing Communications Manager at Ashland

Julie Treon has been named manager, marketing communications in Ashland’s Corporate Affairs Department with responsibility for Ashland Specialty Chemical Company, effective June 2. The announcement was made by Martha Johnson, vice president, divisional communications, and director, corporate communications, Ashland Inc. Treon will be responsible for marketing communications planning and execution, including brand management and positioning, product publicity, advertising and collateral material, web content, tradeshows, media relations and related activities. She also will serve on the Ashland Specialty Chemical Leadership Team, which reports to Gary Cappeline, president, Ashland Specialty Chemical Company. “I am excited to welcome Julie to Ashland,” Cappeline said.
