Coast Guard Boosts Homeland Security with 90 New UTL-Ts

June 27, 2003

A new class of Coast Guard small boat, the Utility Boat Light- Temporary (UTL-T) will come into service this summer. Ninety of the boats, built by Boston Whaler, have been distributed since April 2 around the Coast Guard’s Atlantic Area, which stretches from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean. Twenty of the UTL-Ts have been assigned to the Coast Guard’s Fifth District, which stretches along the Atlantic from New Jersey to South Carolina. Two went to Philadelphia, eight went to the units in the Hampton Roads area, and ten were assigned father south in the Ft. Macon and Wilmington, N.C. areas. The three models of UTL-T range from 24-27 feet in length and are powered by Mercury Marine outboard motors.
