The project to deepen 11 miles of the federal shipping channel from the sea buoy to JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal to a depth of 47 feet from its previous depth of 40 feet has been completed. Federal, state, and local leaders joined JAXPORT and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District to celebrate the project's completion.The 47-foot harbor provides the channel depth needed for larger ships to call Blount Island to and from destinations worldwide and allows existing ships calling Jacksonville to carry more cargo on board.

All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) was recently awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for the design and construction of a new hydrofoil supported aluminum catamaran survey vessel. The vessel will primarily perform survey missions and some dive operations in support of dredging work planned within the Corps’ Philadelphia District. USACE has designated that the new catamaran will replace the aging survey boat, Shuman, which currently fills the mission critical role. The 68’ x 26’ custom aluminum catamaran will be designed by Teknicraft Design, Ltd.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation (GLDD), says it has received the payment from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Jacksonville District which will bring the total value of GLDD’s Miami contract up to $174.1 million. There is $31.6 million remaining to be awarded under the current plan of the Corps. This option, which is the first of two options for the project, covers the dredging of Fisherman's Channel and Lummus Island Turning Basin, as well as dredging the adjacent berthing areas.

(GLDD) for maintenance and associated dredging services for the U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay. The $8,030,480 firm-fixed-price, non-option eligible, non-multi-year contract will be carried out at Fernandina, Fla. and St. Mary's, Ga. with funding from fiscal 2013 military construction funds. This contract was a competitive acquisition via the web with two bids received. The Canaveral Harbor Federal Sand Bypass Project at the Port Canaveral in Fla. is scheduled for construction this month (March). As a result, sand that has accumulated on the north side of Port Canaveral's ocean inlet will be transported south of the inlet via hydraulic dredging equipment. Nearly 630,000 cubic yards of beach quality sand will be transported across the inlet and placed along approximately two miles of shoreline south of the inlet along the City of Cape Canaveral. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company, under contract to the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, will construct the project. The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the largest independent institution of its kind in the world, recently began developing a new piston corer for retrieving sediments from the ocean floor. Once complete in 2006, the deep-water coring system will be the largest in the U.S. and among the biggest in the world. The corer’s enormous weight — 25,000 pounds — coupled with the environmental demands associated with working in water up to 20,000 ft. deep presented major technical challenges to the system required to lower the corer to the sea floor then recover it, along with its ancient sediment samples. The final steps in a U.S. Navy dredging project of Key West Harbor were completed Aug. 8 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The original dredge project, completed in 2005, restored the Key West Harbor to a uniform depth of 36 feet, giving U.S. Navy ships and commercial vessels a clear, six-mile, 300-foot wide channel to enter the port. However, the hurricanes that passed near Key West in 2005 caused sand and silt to fill in some of the dredged depth, causing shoaling in the channel. The final touch to the project began in March with a maintenance dredge of the harbor, to regain the designed depth that was lost due to the shoaling.
