Tom Crowley Jr., Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Crowley Maritime Corporation and Richard du Moulin, president of Marine Transport Corporation (MTC), jointly announced that with the successful integration of MTC into Crowley, du Moulin will be resigning from MTC to pursue other business interests. Crowley acquired Weehawken, N.J.-based MTC in February 2001. Mark Filanowski, senior vice president and chief financial officer of MTC, will also be leaving the company. Both resignations will take effect April 1, 2002. du Moulin had been Chairman of MTC since 1989 when he and Filanowski, utilizing their company Intrepid Shipping, acquired what was then NASDAQ-listed Marine Transport Lines, Inc. (MTL).

MITAGS will host the national conference, “Maritime Careers: Implementing the Action Plans for Recruiting and Retaining Mariners” at Linthicum Heights Campus on May 1-2, 2002. Glen Paine, executive director, Maritime Institute of Technology & Graduate Studies (MITAGS) and Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI), Seattle, Wash., announced that MITAGS would host a national conference for national consensus on mariner recruitment and retention at its Linthicum Heights campus on May 1 and May 2, 2002. The American Merchant Marine has been impacted by a critical loss of professional mariners in recent years. The aim of this conference is to build a national consensus and plan that will project a positive image of mariners and create an appreciative awareness of the maritime industry.

Three Vericor Power Systems' TF50 marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected to power the 118 Wallypower high-speed yacht being built by Intermarine Shipyard, Sarzana, Italy for Wally Yacht. This is Wally Yacht's first foray into high-speed power yachts, and the company's initial application of gas turbines. Wally Yacht, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is a world-renowned designer of high-speed sailing and power yachts. The 118-ft. yacht will feature three TF50 gas turbines in a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. Two TF50s will be used as side or "wing" engines, with one small auxiliary diesel engine connected to each wing engine. The diesels will provide for very slow maneuvering only.

Crowley Maritime Corporation and Marine Transport Corporation jointly announced that Crowley has agreed to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Marine Transport Corporation for $7.00 per share. Under the agreement entered into by the parties, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Crowley will commence a tender offer within the next 10 business days. The transaction is conditioned upon a minimum number of Marine Transport's shares being tendered, regulatory approvals, and other standard closing conditions. The tender offer is not conditioned upon financing. Thomas B. Crowley Maritime Corporation completed its tender offer and has accepted 6,099,774 shares of Marine Transport Corporation common stock. The shares tendered represent approximately 98% of Marine Transport Corporation's total outstanding common stock, including approximately 43,724 shares, which are guaranteed to be delivered. Crowley will purchase these shares as soon as possible at the price of $7.00 per share, net to the seller in cash. Crowley intends to proceed promptly to complete the previously announced proposed merger with Marine Transport Corporation and to acquire the remaining untendered Marine Transport Corporation shares, subject to appraisal rights.

With INTERTANKO's North American Chairman, Richard du Moulin at the helm, Great American II (GAII), at last contact, was in the South Atlantic Ocean, 1,600 n.m. west of Angola. The total distance traveled is more than 10,380 n.m. This past week has been a trying one du Moulin. However, GAII is in the lead and approximately one day ahead of Sea Witch, but in order to maintain this lead, the sailors pushed themselves to the limits of exhaustion. With GAII in the trade winds south of the equator, the prevailing winds come from the southeast. This means that the wind is coming from behind, or astern, of the boat. As a result, the crew has put up the spinnaker, the largest sail on the boat, designed to catch more wind and push Great American II along faster in lighter winds.
