Engine Overhaul for Tidewater PSV in Aberdeen

Marine engineering and propulsion specialist Royston has completed the rapid overhaul of a diesel power plant system onboard a Tidewater Marine operated platform support vessel.Royston engineers undertook the 18,000 running hours service of a Scania DI12 harbor generator, which is onboard the 80m length Highland Chieftain, while the vessel was moored in Aberdeen.The work involved the generator being disassembled with manifolds, turbo, rocker gear, critical pumps, pistons, liners…

Royston Completes FPSO Engine Overhaul

An engineering team from power specialist Royston has completed the overhaul of engines on a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel, operated by Bluewater Services.Engineers undertook the 16,000-hour service on the Wartsila W6L46 diesel engines onboard the 252m, 103,000 DWT Samsung built Haewene Brim, as part of a comprehensive refurbishment and refit of critical fuel and power systems.The FPSO has been operating in the Shell’s Pierce field located in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea for the past five years.

MOL Adopts 'Common Rail Fuel Injection' System

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that its group company, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai, Ltd. will use a main engine equipped with the MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MDT)-developed “common rail fuel injection system” on a newbuilding vessel. Shop test of the main engine was completed on January 29 and the vessel is slated for launching in 2018. After launched, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai, MDT and Makita Corporation(President: Yu Makita; headquarters: Takamatsu-shi, Kagawa Prefecture)will continue testing the system with support from MOL while the vessel is in service. The pilot engine for MDT, manufactured by Makita Corporation,  is the first to adopt the MAN B&W 2 Cycle engine.

Fuel-saving Upgrades for 11 Odfjell Tankers

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Propeller & Aft Ship organization has won an order to retrofit and upgrade a series of 11 × 37,500 dwt vessels from the Odfjell chemical tanker fleet. The vessels are of the Kværner Class and are due to dock during 2015-17, at which time the upgrades will be implemented. The first vessel, M/T Bow Clipper, will dock and be upgraded in August 2015. Each vessel has an MAN B&W two-stroke engine powering a four-bladed, controllable-pitch propeller and a PTO-driven shaft alternator.

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Propeller & Aft Ship organisation has won an order to retrofit and upgrade a series of 11 × 37,500 dwt vessels from the Odfjell chemical tanker fleet. The vessels are of the Kværner Class and are due to dock during 2015-17, at which time the upgrades will be implemented. The first vessel, ‘M/T Bow Clipper’, will dock and be upgraded in August 2015. Each vessel has an MAN B&W two-stroke engine powering a four-bladed, controllable-pitch propeller and a PTO-driven shaft alternator. The vessels’ new service speed at reduced main-engine output – combined with the implementation of MAN’s highly-efficient Kappel propeller blades, a fairing cone and a pre-fabricated rudder bulb kit – will all contribute to power savings and reduced exhaust-gas emissions.

Cat Unveils MaK M 25 E Platform

Caterpillar Marine launched the MaK M 25 E engine platform at SMM, an engine platform developed for state-of-the-art vessel designs with an emphasis on fuel savings. Key product features include optimized engine performance as well as an efficient part load range, which the manufacturer boasts can help to save up to 40 tons of fuel a year when operating vessels at variable engine speeds. Vessels typically operating at lower loads can save up to 60 tons of fuel per year by changing the operating mode from constant to variable engine speed.

Coral Sea Bulker Drifted Dangerously: ATSB Release Findings

In the early hours of 18 May 2012, while transiting the Coral Sea, ID Integrity’s main engine shut down when its fuel pump reversing mechanism came free and jammed. This caused the camshaft to bend and slip in a drive coupling which resulted in the camshaft being out of timing and therefore the engine could not be restarted. The ship drifted in a westerly direction towards the Australian coast and the Great Barrier Reef. During the afternoon of 19 May, the ship passed over Shark Reef, located about 60 miles east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, without incident.

Caterpillar Develops Second Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announce the development of the MaK M 34 DF, a new marine dual fuel engine platform for the commercial marine industry. The M 34 DF dual fuel engine boasts a power rating of 500 kW per cylinder at 720 and 750 rpm in diesel and gas modes, and will share the same footprint as the highly successful M 32 C engine series. The M 34 DF will be capable of running on natural gas as an alternative to marine diesel oil or large and complex scrubber installations for Emission Control Areas (ECA) operation as of 2015. First engine deliveries are foreseen for October 2014.

The GIBBS Quadski, will make its Miami debut at this year's International Boat Show. The dream of two visionary entrepreneurs -- Alan Gibbs and Neil Jenkins -- the Quadski is the product of millions of research dollars and years of development work in the U.S., New Zealand and the UK. It is being assembled at a 54,000-square-foot assembly plant in Auburn Hills, Michigan. New Small-bore Two-stroke Diesel Introduced by MAN

MAN Diesel & Turbo introduces new small-bore two-stroke, updates designs of ME-B & G series engines. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s updated engine programme features several, positive changes to its two-stroke marine segment. The most significant of these is to the ME-B and G portfolios that are increasingly finding favour in the coastal & river segment in major markets such as China, Japan and Russia, and in container traffic, respectively. The programme introduces an entirely new engine – the S30ME-B9 type, which joins the existing 35, 40-, 46-, 50- and 60-cm models in the small-bore ME-B family. The economical ME-B design utilises a camshaft-operated exhaust valve and an electronically controlled fuel-injection system designed to meet Tier-II emission requirements.

Royston Completes Overhaul of P&O Ship Engines

Diesel technology specialists from Royston Australia completed a three-week overhaul of the engines of the P&O Southern Supporter while it was docked in Henderson Fremantle, Western Australia. The project required the eight-man Royston team to work 24 hours a day, seven-days a week to service and re-build the ship’s three Cat 3516 engines. This included a complete strip-down of the engines, replacing the main bearings, overhauling the cylinder heads, upgrading liners with spacer-plate modifications.

Volvo Penta D13 MG Genset Engine

The new Volvo Penta D13 MG marine genset offers more power and high load acceptance, with emission levels in compliance with EPA Tier 3 and low fuel consumption. The secret is the advanced technology Volvo Penta uses throughout the engine. As with all Volvo Penta marine gensets, the D13 MG is delivered complete with electric generator and onboard electronics, tested and classified. Fuel cost alone is a very high portion of a marine genset life-cycle cost. EMS 2, the engine control system developed by Volvo, regulates fuel injection and monitors engine conditions. The system controls the unit injectors, one per cylinder, which operate at a pressure of as much as 2000 bar and atomize the fuel for optimum combustion.
