A Chinese research ship and five escort vessels were in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) on Friday, close to gas blocks operated by Russian firms in the South China Sea, a day after Vietnam urged the ships to leave.The Chinese vessel Xiang Yang Hong 10 began operating in Vietnam's EEZ on May 7, representing the most significant incursion since 2019, according to Ray Powell, who leads Stanford University's Project Myoushu on the South China Sea.He said China's conduct and Vietnam's reaction were a "worrying escalation."China claims most of the energy-rich waters of the South China Sea, including areas that are within Vietnam's EEZ. The 2019 standoff lasted for more than three months and largely targeted a block then operated by Russian state oil firm Rosneft ROSN.MM.

Grandweld shipyard has won a contract with offshore support vessel firm Stanford Marine to build two 42-meter GrandSuperior crew boats with the keel-laying ceremony recently completed. These are Grandweld’s 11th and 12th vessels built for Stanford Marine.Jamal Abki, General Manager of Grandweld Shipyards said “In 2021, we have secured multiple shipbuilding contracts worth $30 million. Although 2020 was difficult for the industry as a whole, we saw a surge in business. This has continued in 2021 and we now have a solid order book until the end of 2022.

Former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead was elected as the chairman of the board of directors of Fincantieri Marinette Marine Corporation July 10.Roughead was the 29th Chief of Naval Operations from 2007 - 2011, after holding six operational commands. There is no more economically and environmentally efficient way of transporting the world’s goods than by sea. Compared to air or road freight, based on per ton of cargo shipped, shipping’s carbon footprint is small. Yet with the 60,000 or so ships that transport 80 percent of the world’s goods emitting about 1.12bn tons of CO2 each year, almost 4.5 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions, it is unequivocal that we need a viable way of reducing our environment impact. As other sectors reduce their carbon footprint shipping’s is likely to increase as an overall percentage.

Through a presidential proclamation, October has been designated as Energy Action Month to stress the importance of energy for our nation's economic vitality today and for a sustainable future. The Department of Navy's Energy Action Month theme for 2016 is "Power. Presence." A naming ceremony was held on April 22, 2016 for Svitzer Deben, Svitzer’s new Damen ASD 3212 80-metric-ton bollard pull escort tug for the Port of Felixstowe. Marc Niederer, Managing Director of Svitzer Europe, hosted the naming ceremony, which saw Svitzer Deben blessed by Sister Marian Davey before Alyson Cheng, wife of Clemence Cheng, CEO of Hutchinson Ports UK, named the tug. Representatives from all parties in the Port of Felixstowe and Harwich Haven Authorities joined the celebrations. Built at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, Svitzer Deben was delivered earlier this year to the expanding Port of Felixstowe, which has attracted regular calls from some of the world’s largest container vessels.

Graduates from SUNY Maritime College receive among the highest return on investment on their degrees in the country. In its annual report of best value colleges, PayScale ranked SUNY Maritime College as the top public institution for return on investment and third nationally, tied with Harvey Mudd College and following California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Peter Stanford, founding president of the South Street Seaport Museum passed away on Thursday morning, 24th March 2016. We have lost our founder. We have lost a passionate advocate for our work.We have lost a friend. I first met Peter Stanford when I joined the Seaport Museum as Waterfront Director. He was visiting to advocate for an exhibition on the ship Wavertree. He spoke enthusiastically about a particular model in the Museum's collection, asserting that it must be a part of the project. As the visit wrapped up, he eagerly queried me on my background. Peter was a persistent man, endlessly insisting that the apparently impossible could be achieved. And in that - and as long as he and Norma were involved - he was quite right.
