Donjon Shipbuilding and Repair, located in Erie, Pennsylvania, was recently awarded a contract by Sterling Equipment of Quincy, Massachusetts to construct two hopper barges, with an option for a third. The principal dimensions of these barges are 225’ long x 42’ wide x 12’ deep. Delivery of the barges is to be made by the middle to end of August 2013. Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair's facility, equipped with 1,250 ft. by 120 ft. by 22 ft. dry dock, is one of the largest shipyards of its kind on the Great Lakes. The facility includes 4,000 ft. of pier space and more than 200,000 square ft.

Marine Travelift Inc. announced that Tampa, Fla.-based RiverHawk Marine has acquired one of its 300C mobile boat hoists, thanks in part to a Small Shipyard Grant from the U.S. Maritime Administration. The Small Shipyard Grants program is administered by the Office of Shipyards and Marine Engineering in Washington D.C. RiverHawk’s 7.5-acre facility on West Tyson Avenue in Tampa is located with easy deep-water access from the Gulf of Mexico. Tidewater began with the 1955 launch of the Ebb Tide, the first purpose-built boats to serve the Gulf of Mexico offshore oil industry. With over 400 vessels currently serving the oil industry worldwide the company is now the largest offshore support vessel operator in the world. The fleet has been built by acquiring competitors but also by an extensive and systematic new construction program. Currently the latest generation of platform supply vessels have completed the design phase.

Without much fanfare, VT Halter Marine, Gulfport, Miss. is completing a number of very large and capable vessels for both commercial and U. S. Government interests. The company seems on track with the objectives set last year by CEO Boyd E. "Butch" King to add additional projects to their two shipyards located in the Pascagoula, Miss. area. For example, the company will christen the Oscar Dyson October 17. This is a very unique Fisheries Survey Vessel for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a Federal Government agency. The vessel is 208 ft. long with a 49-ft. beam and a relatively deep 28-ft. hull that has a maximum draft of 19 ft.. The Oscar Dyson has a steel, ice-classed hull with an aluminum deckhouse and is anticipated to run at 14 knots.

Technip-Coflexip Group announced that Atlantia Offshore Limited has awarded Gulf Marine Fabricators (GMF) a fabrication contract for the Matterhorn dry-tree TLP topsides facility and foundation piles. GMF based in Aransas Pass is an entity of the Technip-Coflexip Group. The work scope includes procurement, fabrication and outfitting of a 6000-ton topsides facility with a height of 62 ft. and an area of approximately 63,484 square ft. The scope also includes the fabrication of 6 piles each 96 in. in diameter and 415 ft. long. The piles have a total weight of 2100 tons. The mini-TLP platform will be installed at Mississippi Canyon Block 243 in 2,800 ft. of water. GMF will perform this work at its North Yard located in Aransas Pass, Texas.

Pride will be redeployed to another homeport. including an upscale "steakhouse-style" supper club serving U.S.D.A. beef and other gourmet cuisine. Four years into the new Millennium designers of workboats are incorporating new technologies and greater efficiencies into their designs to produce vessels that can do more work and do it better than designs of just a few years ago. This is very prevalent in the oil patch where today's supply boat designs emphasize more efficient vessels that can carry as much material to the rig or platform as vessels 30-40 ft. longer in years past. "Our new 207 ft. supply vessels can carry over 6,000 barrels of liquid mud," said Robert Socha, marketing manager of Bollinger Shipyards, Lockport, La. "That is a key feature of these vessels that can work the new deeper gas wells on the shelf and also carry drilling liquids to the growing number of deepwater wells now in service," Socha added.

Morse Rubber LLC completed a purchase of assets, which include various product ranges and the Keokuk, Iowa manufacturing facility, from Metso Minerals Industries. components. The manufacturing facility comprises 120,000 square ft. under roof with capabilities that include rubber to metal bonding; large scale molding; extruding; machining of rubber, composites and metals as well as metal welding and fabrication. Morse Marine Bearings are rubber lined and water lubricated. They require no seals, and no oil or grease for lubrication. The use of water as a lubricant provides efficient low friction operation and a stable lubricant film due to the incompressibility of water. Dame Judi Dench, star of "The Importance of Being Earnest," "Shakespeare in Love" and the three latest James Bond 007 films, served as godmother to Carnival Cruise Lines' newest ship, Carnival Legend, at an official naming ceremony in Harwich, England, Wednesday, August 21. Oscar-winner Dench broke the traditional bottle of champagne against the ship's hull to officially name Carnival Legend. Dench was named a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1988. Built in Finland, the 88,500-ton 2,124-passenger Carnival Legend features 12 passenger decks, 16 bars and lounges, four swimming pools, a three-deck water slide, Internet cafe, 14,500-square-foot health spa, duty-free shopping mall, wedding chapel, video arcade, 1,800-square-ft. children's play area and three restaurants.

Three PacifiCat-class fast ferries capable of carrying 1,000 passengers and 250 vehicles at speeds of up to 34 knots will be sold at an international, unreserved public auction March 24 at Canada Place, Vancouver, by Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. The 400-ft. (122-m) aluminum vessels, PacifiCat Explorer, PacifiCat Discovery and PacifiCat Voyager, are among the largest catamaran fast ferries in the world, and were designed by Phil Hercus of Incat Designs, Sydney, Australia, and built in British Columbia, Canada, in March 1999, September 1999 and July 2000 respectively. Current owner BC Ferries has determined that the vessels, which have seen very little service, are not suited to the high level of commercial trucks and buses on its ferry routes.

Marine interior contractor, James P. Colie & Associates was selected for refurbishment of Crown Princess and Sky Princess. On Crown Princess, craftsmen refurbished the 10,000-sq.-ft. café on the Lido Deck and building a new children's center at Cascade General Shipyard in Portland, Oregon. A team of nearly 50 craftsmen made the necessary removals in the café and fully outfit a new window-enclosed structure. All new finishes were installed throughout the café including wallcoverings, flooring, seating, cabinetry and millwork, buffet lines, dance floor and stage. The forward entrances were expanded and modified for better traffic flow and air conditioning control. Above the café, a vertical extension of the café structure wasadded, creating a new 2,000-square-ft.
