Odfjell to Install Alfa Laval's Air Lubrication System on Tanker

Odfjell Ship Management has selected Alfa Laval’s OceanGlide fluidic air lubrication system for installation on one of their tankers later this year.OceanGlide is newly acquired technology for Alfa Laval. The patented and class-approved system utilizes fluidic oscillators to generate an even layer of micro air bubbles across a vessel’s entire flat bottom, reducing friction and drag and therefore fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The fluidic technology creates streamlined sections on the vessel’s flat bottom, each with its own fluidic band that generates bubbles.

Drydocks World Inks Deal with Silverstream

Retrofit of air lubrication technology achieves verified performance of 6.6% net savings during initial testing.Silverstream Technologies' air lubrication system, the Silverstream System, has reportedly delivered 6.6% fuel and emissions savings during testing on the Shell-chartered 170,000 cbm LNG carrier Methane Patricia Camila.The Silverstream System is designed to enable fuel and emissions efficiencies by producing a thin layer of microbubbles along the full flat bottom of the vessel, reducing frictional resistance between the water and the hull.

China Merchants Orders VLCC with Sails

Wärtsilä and Silverstream to Collaborate

Technology group Wärtsilä, and Silverstream Technologies announced the signing of a Licence and Co-operation Agreement for future sales and servicing of the Silverstream System. As an authorized sales and service partner, Wärtsilä intends to fully integrate Silverstream’s air lubrication system within its propulsion solutions.By offering the Silverstream System as an integral part of Wärtsilä’s propulsion solution for newbuild vessels, compliance with the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) will be further improved. Silverstream Air Lubrication Delivers Fuel Savings

Silverstream Technologies and Shell has confirmed consistent net efficiency savings in excess of 4% in fuel consumed, following the successful long-term operation of Silverstream Technologies’ proprietary air lubrication technology, the Silverstream System, on-board the 40,000 DWT tanker MT Amalienborg. Further analysis of the data gathered through this process predicts that for larger vessels, efficiency savings of up to 8% are possible. Visitors to the 2016 European Marine Engineering Conference in Amsterdam this year will be able to hear a keynote speech from Maersk Fluid Technology managing director Jens Byrgesen, who will talk about his company’s success with “Blending-On-Board” lubrication technology. Air Cavity System Aims to Help Reduce Emissions

DK Group will install its emissions-reducing Air Cavity System (ACS) technology on a 12,580 deadweight ton (DWT) multi-purpose vessel owned by Danish shipowner and ship management company Dannebrog Group. The deal marks the first time that DK Group's patented air lubrication technology has been installed on an international commercial vessel, and represents significant progression in the adoption of clean technology within the shipping industry. The Air Cavity System uses air bubbles in the boundary layer of the vessel to reduce frictional resistance between the water and the hull surface. The fuel efficiency generated by ACS will be up to 10 percent and will depend on vessel type and size. The investment payback period will range between 18 months and 3 years.

Sea Trials Show Air Lubrication Delivers Energy Savings

Silverstream Technologies and Shell announced the sea trial of Silverstream Technologies’ new air lubrication technology for ships, the Silverstream System. The sea trials, independently verified by Lloyds Register Ship Performance Team, show net energy efficiency savings in all analyzed cases, the companies reported. Shell funded, and with Silverstream, oversaw the installation of the Silverstream System on the 40,000DWT products tanker MT Amalienborg, owned by the Danish Shipping company Dannebrog Rederi. The trials verified by the Lloyds Register Ship Performance Team showed net average energy efficiency savings of 4.3% and 3.8% for the vessel in ballast and laden conditions respectively.
