Ukraine Arrests Turkish Ship for Visiting Crimean Port

Turkey owned merchant ship flying the flag of Tuvalu was arrested by Ukrainian authorities over a visit it made to a port in Crimea, reports Reuters. The ship's captain detained. Tuvalu-registered 5,095 deadweight ton ship Kanton was being held in the Ukrainian port of Kherson. They said the crew could go to jail for up to three years and the ship could be seized. Russian annexed the Crimea peninsula from Ukraine last year, after Ukrainian protesters toppled a pro-Moscow president. Ukraine has said any visit to Crimean ports is illegal, and a ban came into effect in July last year. Shipowners Istanbul company Master Shipping Ltd said: "This arrest was unlawful. The Kanton called at Sevastopol in Crimea on July 24, 2014 to pick up a cargo of feed barley, he said.

Ukrainian authorities have arrested a Turkish-owned cargo ship and detained its captain over a visit it made to a port in Crimea after Russian annexed the peninsula from Ukraine last year. Prosecutors said the Tuvalu-registered 5,095 deadweight tonne ship Kanton was being held in the Ukrainian port of Kherson. They said the crew could go to jail for up to three years and the ship could be seized. The vessel's Istanbul-based owner, Master Shipping Ltd, called the detention illegal. Russia seized Crimea shortly after Ukrainian protesters toppled a pro-Moscow president in February 2014. Ukraine has said any visit to Crimean ports is illegal, and a ban came into effect in July last year.

I.S.R.A. Appoints Arjen Uytendaal Director

The International Ship Recycling Association has appointed maritime expert Arjen Uytendaal as Director. The Association was founded in 2007 by a group of stakeholders in the ship recycling industry made up of Processing Yards, Classification Societies and a Ship Owner. In order to achieve their goal of promoting green ship recycling - as opposed to the traditional beaching - the organization is now ready for the next step. Arjen Uytendaal, former P&O Nedlloyd director and now independent maritime professional, will be tasked to promote I.S.R.A. among all stakeholders. “It is extremely important that I.S.R.A is recognized as the single authority representing all recycling yards in the world, working to the latest I.M.O.
