U.S. Grain Prices Soar as Floods Shut Waterways

U.S. grain farmers scrambled to find shelter for their crops and handlers hunted for alternative transportation routes, as widespread floods shut waterways from Illinois to Missouri and spurred a surge in physical prices of corn and soybeans. The sudden jump in prices could complicate a months-long stand-off between farmers who are unwilling to sell their bumper crop at low prices and buyers who have refused to budge on their cash offers amid plentiful supplies. Shipping Lines Cut CO2 Emissions

The container carriers have managed to reduce their combined CO2 emissions by around one third since 2009, according to a new report. Average CO2 emissions per container per kilometer for global ocean transportation routes have declined by 8.4 percent from 2013 to 2014 and by more than 29 percent since 2009, according to BSR’s Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) annual report for 2015. The report attributed a portion of these results to the changes in carrier representation or global trade conditions. In addition, the continued performance improvement was also attributed to carrier fleet efficiency and data quality, both of which have direct benefits for shipping customers. CCWG is comprised of 45 members representing 80 percent of ocean container cargo carriers and many customers.

The Need for Marine Spatial Planning

The sea is not empty. Ports, harbors and waterways have to manage an ever growing volume and mix of recreational activity and heavy commercial activity - at times across the same compact waterspace. This creates a series of challenging marine planning requirements that need to be addressed. While land use is often well zoned and tightly regulated, there is frequently limited designation of waterspace outside of specific fairway / anchorage demarcations and protected ecological marine areas.
