The Mexican government’s decision to loosen its policy of keeping a fishing-free zone around a protected area in the Gulf of California region was a “setback” to keeping alive a near-extinct porpoise species, a conservation group said on Thursday.There are thought to be only between six and 20 vaquita porpoises left and the species is on the brink of extinction as more die each year in fishing nets than are being born, biologists say.Mexico had previously banned boats entering the species’ last sanctuary off the coast of Mexico, known as the “zero-tolerance zone”.

On November 1st, 2019, the latest Damen Shipyards Group fishing vessel, constructed at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam (Maaskant) was named in a dedicated ceremony organized by leading fishing company Van der Zwan. The vessel was named Spes Nova by Director of Fisheries and Rural Affairs at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality for the Netherlands Nanou Beekman.The Spes Nova, a UK-205 fly-shooter/twinrigger vessel, is part of a newly-developed range of fishing trawlers based on a Vripack Naval Architects design that sets new benchmarks for the entire sector.

The global port management company, International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) said that its Honduran unit  Operadora Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC) is in talks with the government of Honduras to improve the facilities at Puerto Cortes, Central America 4’s (CA-4).Puerto Cortes, Central America 4’s (CA-4) largest port operated by OPC, can expect faster cargo movement in and around the terminal with OPC beefing up its partnership with Honduran authorities for improved and more efficient port services, said a statement."OPC is working with the Honduran government and Puerto Cortés authorities to enhance the port’s competitiveness and better serve its customers in the four-nation CA-4, comprising Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

China has the world’s largest and farthest-ranging fishing operation, outstripping the next 10 biggest combined, according to what researchers say is the most comprehensive and data-intensive study on the subject. Ships from China amassed approximately 17 million hours of fishing in 2016, mostly off the southern coast of their home country, but also as far away as Africa and South America. Japan's Ministry of Agriculture said it would import 26,230 tonnes of feed-quality wheat, and 20,750 tonnes of barley for livestock use, via a simultaneous buy and sell (SBS) auction that closed late on Wednesday. The ministry sought that 120,000 tonnes of feed wheat and 200,000 tonnes of feed barley to be loaded by June 30, and arrive in Japan by August 31, in the tender that is usually conducted every week. Ministry is seeking the same volume for each grain to be loaded and shipped during the same period in a similar tender, which will be held on March 16. Japan buys a small portion of feed wheat and barley via so-called SBS auctions, in which end-users and importers specify the origin, price and quantity of grain, allowing millers to meet their varied needs for the feed grain.

China will actively promote maritime scientific research and innovation as well as international cooperation to advance sustainable marine development, according to the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), reports Xinhua. Chen Lianzeng, deputy director of the SOA, made the remarks at an annual meeting of the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) in Qingdao, a coastal city in East China's Shandong Province, on Monday. Chen pointed out that global research in ocean science and technology has entered a new stage involving cross-disciplinary studies and international collaboration, adding that all countries should work together to protect the marine environment and combat climate change.

China's Import Inspection Authority, AQSIQ, is now requiring U.S. distiller's dried grains imports to be officially certified free of the MIR 162 GMO trait, the U.S. Grains Council, an export trade group, said in a letter emailed to Reuters by a trade source. The new requirement is effective immediately, the letter said. All DDGs shipments departing from July 24 that do not meet the certification requirement will be rejected, the North American Export Grain Association (NAEGA) said in a note to members, emailed to Reuters by another trade source. Pingtan Marine Enterprise Ltd., a global fishing company based in the People's Republic of China (PRC), has announced that the company recently ordered 25 newly-built fishing vessels as a continuation of its fleet replacement plan. The vessels have received ratifications from the Ministry of Agriculture of the People's Republic of China (MOA), which ensures that the licenses to fish in foreign waters will be transferred to the new vessels. Japan's concern over a standoff with China over the disputed Senkaku Islands deepens and might escalate. The Japan Coast Guard and the Defense Ministry are closely monitoring voyages of the Haijian 50, which can be loaded with helicopters reports Asahi Shimbun. The vessel, belonging to the China Marine Surveillance, an agency of the government’s State Oceanic Administration, sailed in the contiguous zone next to Japanese territorial waters surrounding the islands on 10 days in February. Of these voyages, it encroached into territorial waters on four days. The Japanese side was most alarmed on Feb. 18, when the hanger doors opened on the Haijian 50 while the ship was approaching an area about 1 kilometer to the southeast of the Uotsurishima islet…

Fishery Inspection Surveillance Vessel for Angola launched at Damen Shipyards Galati. Damen Shipyards Galati is building the Ngola Kiluange, a Fishery Inspection Surveillance Vessel (FISV) 6210, for the Angolan Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries. With another two ships under construction, the Angolan government is set to strengthen its knowledge of and control over its rich fishing grounds. The spectators at Damen’s Romania based Galati Shipyard were treated to a moment of suspense when the 62 m Nngola Kiluange sharply heeled over at her launch.

The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) has spoken out on behalf of the shipping industry in response to the U.K. government's latest action in the fight against foot and mouth disease. In a letter to Mr. J M Scudamore, chief veterinary officer of The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), the ICS has voiced its concerns over recent instructions that all wheeled vehicles must be sprayed with disinfectant prior to departure from U.K. ports, including those being carried in containers. Whilst the Institute fully supports the efforts of the government in tackling the spread of foot and mouth, it has taken issue with the practicalities of the spraying program.

Luis Téllez has been elected to the Global Industries, Ltd. Board of Directors of the Company effective March 31, 2003. Téllez is Executive Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer of DESC, S.A. de C.V., a diversified industrial conglomerate and one of Mexico’s largest corporations. Prior to his association with DESC, Téllez served as Mexico’s Secretary of Energy from 1997 until 2000. He served as Chief of Staff to President Ernesto Zedillo from 1994 to 1997. Previously, Téllez was appointed Head Economist at the Ministry of Treasury from 1987 to 1990 and Undersecretary of Planning at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources from 1990 to 1994.

The offshore patrol vessels to be built by Tenix Defence Pty Ltd for the New Zealand Navy will be equipped with Wärtsilä propulsion systems. Wärtsilä won contracts for propulsion systems for the seven-vessel Project Protector of the Royal New Zealand Navy. The main contractor for the project is the Australian defense supplier Tenix Defence Pty Ltd, on behalf of the New Zealand Ministry of Defense. The project is for the supply of seven vessels: a 429ft (131m) multi-role vessel (MRV), two 279ft (85m) offshore patrol vessels (OPV) and four 180ft (55m) inshore patrol vessels (IPV). The first will be delivered December 2006. The vessels are intended for military and civilian roles in New Zealand's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), in the South Pacific and the Southern Ocean.
