Global engineering and defense technologies provider Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today the promotion of Edmond Hughes to executive vice president and chief human resources officer. U.S. forecasters expect an above-normal 13-19 named storms during the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season from June 1 through November 30, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center said on Thursday.NOAA forecasters estimate three to six major hurricanes packing winds of at least 111 miles per hour may form. The U.S.' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said it expects to award contracts for the construction of two new oceanographic ships by the end of the year. Once in service, the new large oceangoing, multi-mission research vessels will support missions ranging from general oceanographic research and exploration to marine life, climate and ocean ecosystem studies, NOAA said.“When completed, these new state-of-the-art ships will be vital for collecting high-quality data and leading scientific discoveries,” said Neil Jacobs, Ph.D., acting NOAA administrator.

The European shipowners together with MEP Wim Van de Camp yesterday organised a seminar in the European Parliament to discuss the International Maritime Organization (IMO) initial Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reduction strategy for shipping. The initial strategy was adopted in the 72nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the IMO in April this year, said a release from  European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA). Van de Camp opened the well-attended event and said: “Today I have invited you here to discuss the efforts of the international shipping industry to reduce its GHG emissions. It’s important that the Transport committee pays attention to the international shipping sector’s goals”.

During the past month a pusher barge moored in the Antwerp port area on the Left bank of the Scheldt carrying four large storage tanks each 50 metres long. These cylinders came from a specialist tank builder in Germany and were carried down the Rhine to Antwerp. After being unloaded they continued their journey by night by special road transport to the Ineos Oxide site in Zwijndrecht. The British chemical company Ineos entrusted coordination of this project to Jacobs Belgium, specialised in project coordination and design, in particular for the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical sectors. Unfortunately, ships can also unintentionally transport stowaways, small organisms which live in ballast water. Most people would not look at small organisms like mitten crabs or zebra mussels and think they are a major threat to the environment – and in their natural habitats they pose no threat. But what happens when these organisms are introduced into a new ecosystem? The Vancouver International Maritime Centre (VIMC) welcomes the Provincial government’s $1-million commitment for the second year in a row. B.C. The VIMC’s mandate is to encourage global shipping companies to move their operations to Vancouver, bringing high-paid, high-value jobs with them. The city is well-positioned to create the first maritime hub on the west coast of North America, offering competitive tax rates and access to the Asia Pacific Gateway. Last fall, Singapore-based AAL opened an office in Vancouver, with the support of the VMIC. American corporation XPO Logistics, led by multi-millionaire Bradley Jacobs, agreed to acquire French transport services and global logistics solutions provider Norbert Dentressangle, led by multi-millionaire Norbert Dentressangle, for US$3.53 billion including debt, according to Bloomberg. Dentressangle will sell the 67 percent of his family’s ownership in the company for €217.50 (US$240.58) per share. XPO will then start a tender offer for the remaining stake at the same price. A binding agreement has been received from  Norbert Dentressangle and his family for their entire 67% stake in the company and XPO will launch an all-cash tender offer for the remaining shares on antitrust clearances in the US and Germany.

BMT WBM (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has announced that the Hawkesbury-Nepean River and South Creek model, developed for Sydney Water has been awarded the Program Innovation Award at this year’s Australian Water Association’s (AWA) New South Wales (NSW) Awards. BMT developed the TUFLOW FV (estuarine and riverine) component of the model, a core modelling tool which is used in many environmental modelling projects. Sydney Water is Australia's largest water utility, supplying water, wastewater, recycled water and some stormwater services to over 4.6 million people.
