US Signs Highest LNG Export Contract

US signed highest volume of global long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG)  export contracts in 2019, accounting for around a 67% of global share. Abundant shale gas production in the US has enabled the country to export natural gas as LNG. to global markets. According to GlobalData, the US has signed five long-term contracts in 2019 for the export of 22.3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. Of these, the contract signed between Golden Pass Products and Ocean LNG Limited had the highest export volumes with 15.6mtpa.LNG will be supplied from the Golden Pass II LNG liquefaction terminal in Texas for 20 years from 2024 to 2044.Sunrita Dutta…

ClassNK Updates Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships

Image: ClassNK

Classification society ClassNK has published the third version of its Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships which aims to provide comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety and explosion prevention measure. As restrictions on sulfur emissions within ECAs tightened to 0.1% on January 1, 2015 amid stronger calls for a greener shipping industry, attention has turned to the potential of natural gas as a sulfur-free, cleaner alternative to liquid fuel oil.

ClassNK Releases v3 Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships

ClassNK has released the third version of its Guidelines for Gas Fuelled Ships. The updated version provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on key design features relating to bunkering, hull structure, fire safety, and explosion prevention measures. As restrictions on sulfur emissions within ECAs tightened to 0.1% on January 1, 2015 amid stronger calls for a greener shipping industry, attention has turned to the potential of natural gas as a sulfur-free, cleaner alternative to liquid fuel oil. Abundant shale gas reserves and recent developments in non-conventional energy resources have also led to an increase in gas fuelled newbuildings and projects.

US Gives Final Approvals to Freeport for LNG Exports

Proposed liquefaction facilities (Image courtesy of Freeport LNG)

The U.S. Department of Energy gave two final approvals on Friday to Freeport LNG Development LP to export liquefied natural gas, or LNG, from its project in Texas to any country. The planned project in Quintana Island, Texas, would have the capacity to export up to 1.8 billion cubic feet a day of LNG once constructed. With domestic gas production booming, U.S. companies have lined up to ship the nation's abundant shale gas to energy- hungry consumers in Europe and Asia. The companies need special approval to export LNG to countries with which Washington does not have free trade agreements.

LNG on the Rise

As the world’s economies search for sustainable, reliable, renewable energy sources, they are also more closely examining a range of fossil fuels to find the cleanest, least harmful of those to cut carbon emissions and improve air quality in the process. In the drive to cut carbon emissions, interest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) is growing. LNG is being looked at not only as fuel for generating electricity and heat, but also as a fuel for powering marine vessels, road vehicles and trains. With the recent development of abundant shale gas deposits in the United States, the LNG market is really set to take off. The common method for transporting natural gas worldwide is to liquefy it so it takes up less volume and can be transported in specialized LNG carrier vessels.

FERC Approves Freeport LNG Export Project

U.S. federal regulators on Wednesday approved construction of Freeport LNG Development LP's liquefied natural gas export project in Texas. Freeport is the third U.S. LNG export project to get the green light to begin construction from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The planned project would have the capacity to export up to 1.8 billion cubic feet a day of LNG once operational. With domestic gas production booming, U.S. companies have lined up to ship the nation's abundant shale gas abroad. FERC approved construction of Sempra Energy's Cameron LNG export terminal in Louisiana last month. Companies need approval from both the Energy Department…

Natural Gas as Bridge Fuel

Following a recent UN report on climate change mitigation, which laid out a raft of potential changes to the global energy system, headline writers concentrated on the massive shift to renewable energy outlined in the report. Douglas Westwood points out, however, there was also a notable shift in tone on natural gas. The UN report expressly talks about the potential for clean-burning natural gas to be used as a “bridge fuel”, buying the world precious time to make the difficult shift to even cleaner forms of energy.

IEA Sees Growth of Natural Gas

But the "Golden Age" is still in full swing as gas emerges as a significant transportation fuel, a new report says. Natural gas will continue to increase its share of the global energy mix, growing at 2.4% per year between now and 2018, the IEA said in its Medium-Term Gas Market Report (MTGMR) issued today. However, this projected growth rate is lower than the IEA’s forecast last year of 2.7%, due to persistent demand weakness in Europe as well as difficulties in upstream production growth in the Middle East and Africa. At the same time, the report sees gas emerging as a significant transportation fuel: Thanks to abundant shale gas in the United States and amid more stringent environmental policies in China…
