Diversity, Tech on Tap at WISTA Conference

A top hostage negotiator, the CEO of a company which supplies environmental products to ship owners and operators and the heads of two maritime technology firms are all part of an impressive line-up of speakers scheduled to speak at the 2019 Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA) AGM & Conference which takes place next week from Tuesday, October 29, to Friday, November 1. The four-day event is being hosted by WISTA Cayman Islands and is expected to bring over 200 maritime experts from 30-plus countries.

Great Ships of 2014: CSAV Tyndall

CSAV Tyndall is an 8600 TEU containership built by Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries (DMHI) and is part of a series of four containerships delivered to Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd. (UK) between 2013 and beginning of 2014. These projects are the biggest containerships ever built in the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea area. The vessel measures 299.9 x 48.4 x 14.5 m and has a maximum speed more than 25 knots powered by a MAN B&W licensed main engine rated at  64,485 HP. The ship was built under the supervision of Lloyd’s Register and registered in Monrovia, Liberia.

Container Shippers Join Forces for Safety

The Container Ship Safety Forum (CSSF) has been launched as a global business-to-business network that aims to improve safety performance and management practices in the container shipping industry. Founding members CMA CGM Group, Costamare Shipping Company S.A., E.R. Schiffahrt GmbH & Cie. KG, Hamburg Südamerikanische Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft KG, Maersk Line, Rickmers Shipmanagement and Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd., have joined forces to improve safety performance through collaboration.

Offshore Runner Vessel Launched

The Offshore Runner vessel (Yard No 358) for Raj Shipping Agencies Ltd, Mumbai was launched on February 11 at Dempo Shipbuilding and Engineering Pvt Ltd, Old Goa. Among the dignitaries present were, Mr Naushir Mehta, director of Raj Shipping Agencies Ltd, Ms Mehta, Mr Dilip Sawant, design consultant, Mr Yatish S Dempo, director, Mr Sanjeev A Kanekar, general manager (works), Mr Vivek Phadte, works manager and other members of staff and contractors. source: Navhind Times

MCA Approves First Ship Security Plans

The United Kingdom’s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has recently approved the first two Ship Security Plans for UK flagged vessels. It expects these to be the first of many before the implementation date of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) on 1st July 2004. The first verifications of ships security systems have been scheduled for early November. The plan approved was for the vessel CMA – CGM Normandie. This has been carried out as a joint exercise between the operators of the vessel, Zodiac Maritime Agencies Ltd, and their security advisers, Maritime and Underwater Security Consultants (MUSC). Zodiac were pleased with the progress and are intending to implement the plan on board the vessel as soon as possible…

TMM Appoints Hesco As Japan Agent

Shipping company TMM Lines appointed Hesco Agencies Ltd. as its new shipping agent in Japan in a move to strengthen operations with the Asian region. As of August 10, Hesco will replace Nippon Maritime Co., TMM's previous shipping agency in Japan. TMM Lines and two other shipping lines were partially owned by Mexico's Transportacion Maritima Mexicana but were sold to its partner Canadian Pacific Ltd. in the year's first quarter. Hesco is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ben Lines Group.

Insurance Market To Back Reform

The International Underwriting Association, Lloyd's and the Lloyd's Insurance Brokers' Committee have unveiled a jointly agreed program to reform business processes in the London insurance market. More than 350 organizations that form the market - insurance and reinsurance companies, Lloyd's syndicates and brokers - will now be asked to sign up to a document indicating support for the principles of the program. The report, London Market Principles 2001 (LMP2001), is based on a consultation document published in May, amended to accommodate the extensive feedback received. Ownership of the reforms extends widely across the market, with the common aim to improve customer service, speed up the way the market operates, and create long-term cost savings.

Tankers International Employs Magenta Multi-Agent

Tankers International (TI), one of the largest operators of modern double hull VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers), uses Magenta's leading edge multi-agent software (Ocean) to help identify and schedule the most profitable combination of cargoes for its fleet of more than 40 vessels. The market in which TI operates is extremely volatile with demand and transportation costs fluctuating on a daily basis. Magenta has worked closely with TI's London-based agency, Tankers (UK) Agencies Ltd., to develop and deliver a sophisticated, real-time, ocean logistics tool to help optimize the performance and management of its modern double hull fleet.

Stricken Ship in the English Channel Is Being Towed

Bloomberg reported that a container ship that ran into difficulties in the English Channel is now being towed to the French port of Le Havre, said an official from the company that hired it. An official at Mediterranean Shipping Co. SA in Geneva, which has hired the MSC Napoli, said the ship was under tow. Earlier today, British Broadcasting Corp. reported that a vessel was sinking in the sea between England and France. The U.K.'s Maritime & Coastguard Agency said the vessel wasn't being towed. All 26 crew have abandoned ship and two Royal Navy helicopters have been dispatched to assist in the operation, which is being led by the French coast guard, the Maritime & Coastguard said in a statement on its Web site.
