US Navy Sailor Missing off Japan
U.S. Navy and Japanese ships and aircraft are searching for a sailor reported missing from USS Shiloh (CG 67) about 180 miles east of Okinawa, June 8. USS Shiloh (CG 67) reported a man overboard at approximately 9:30 p.m. JST. The ship was conducting routine operations at the time of the incident. Multiple searches of the ship were conducted, but were unable to locate the sailor. Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from USS Shiloh, USS McCampbell (DDG 85) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), as well as a P-8 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, are conducting an airborne search while Shiloh, McCampbell, Reagan, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) and Japanese Coast Guard Ship Kudaka conduct a surface search.
China Sends Maritime Safety Vessel Deep Sea
China's Ministry of Transport has dispatched "Haixun 01" from Shanghai to make goodwill visits to Australia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia. The vessel will carry out communication activities and promote bilateral and multilateral drills and work exchanges, as well as share practical experiences. "Haixun 01" is expected to arrive at Sydney port in Australia on June 22, and will then visit the three other countries in July. Traveling a voyage of 13,909 nautical miles, the vessel is expected to return to Shanghai on Aug. "Haixun 01" entered service in April.
USS Jacksonville Strikes Vessel, No Injuries
No one was hurt when the periscope on USS Jacksonville (SSN 699), a Los Angeles-class submarine, struck a vessel while operating in the Arabian Gulf Jan. 10 at approximately 5 a.m. local time. Jacksonville surfaced from periscope depth to ascertain if there was any damage to the unidentified vessel. The vessel continued on a consistent course and speed offering no indication of distress or acknowledgement of a collision. Damage appears to be limited to one of Jacksonville's two periscopes. The reactor remains in a safe condition, there was no damage to the propulsion plant systems and there is no concern regarding watertight integrity. A U.S. P-3 Orion aircraft conducted a search of the area and saw no debris in the water or vessels in distress. The airborne search of the area is complete.
