IMO Urges GHG Reduction

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim has called for Member States and the entire maritime sector including shipping and ports, to come on board to achieve the ambitions set out in the historic IMO initial strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, adopted last year.The UN body said that the strategy makes a firm commitment to a complete phase out of GHG emissions from ships, a specific linkage to the Paris Agreement and a series of clear levels of ambition, including at least a 50 per cent cut in emissions from the sector by 2050.“We need to focus on technology transfer and research and development…

Royals on the High Seas!

Regent Seven Seas Explorer is billed as the most luxurious cruise ship in the world. Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco took the role of godmother. Dubbed as the ‘most luxurious ship ever built’, at a whopping cost of $450 million, Regent Seven Seas Explorer boasts one of the highest space ratios and lowest guest to cruise ratios in the history of cruising. Accompanied by her husband and Monaco's reigning monarch, Prince Albert II, the former Olympic swimmer  took the role of godmother and cut a red velvet ribbon. “It is an honor to be the godmother of this magnificent ship, Seven Seas Explorer," Princess Charlene of Monaco said.

Oceans Can’t Take Any more: Researchers Fear Fundamental Change

Our oceans need an immediate and substantial reduction of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. If that doesn’t happen, we could see far-reaching and largely irreversible impacts on marine ecosystems, which would especially be felt in developing countries. That’s the conclusion of a new review study published today in the journal Science. In the study, the research team from the Ocean 2015 initiative assesses the latest findings on the risks that climate change poses for our oceans, and demonstrates how fundamentally marine ecosystems are likely to change if human beings continue to produce just as much greenhouse gases as before.

CSCL Globe Calls the Port of Zeebrugge

On her maiden voyage in the AEX1 service, China Shipping Container Lines’ containership CSCL Globe, currently the world’s largest container vessel, moored at Belgium's Port of Zeebrugge after embarking on its first voyage in China last December. The CSCL Globe, which measures 400 meters in length and approximately 59 meters wide, features a maximum capacity of 19,100 TEUs. Lining the containers up in a row would result in a container chain of 115 kilometers. The continuously growing dimensions in shipping allow freight to be transported more economically.

Largest Container Ship at Zeebrugge Port

While on her maiden voyage in the AEX1 service, the container vessel China Shipping Container Lines Globe, currently the world’s - or the “globe’s”- largest container vessel, moored at the port of Zeebrugge. The ship embarked on its first voyage in China last December. The CSCL Globe measures 400 meters in length and is approximately 59 meters wide. Its stunning maximum capacity is 19.100 twenty feet equivalent units. Lining the containers up in a row would result in a container chain of 115 kilometers. The Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea will be delivering four sister vessels in the course of the year. The continuously growing dimensions in shipping allow freight to be transported more economically.

A Monaco yacht show dedicated to the Green philosophy through numerous initiatives aimed at boosting environmental awareness in the world of pleasure craft. On Saturday 28 September, aboard the 55-meter Ocean Paradise built by Benetti shipyards, an event was held which left a notable green footprint on the decks of the super yachts: leading classification company RINA Services and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation joined forces to promote the sustainable use of wood in the yachting industry.

First Ship of CEM/ANN Service to Arrive in July

The first container vessel in the recently adjusted CEM/ANN service of Evergreen Lines and Hanjin Shipping Lines is expected to arrive in Zeebrugge on July 19. The container vessels of the CEM/ANN service will be handled at PSA’s Zeebrugge International Port Terminal. Earlier this year, Evergreen and Hanjin announced a series of changes to the jointly-operated Asia-Europe CEM/ANN service. Port of Zeebrugge was added to the loop as the last European port before the ships head back to Asia. Evergreen and Hanjin have also chartered slots to Cosco, “K” Line and Yangming for this service. Today, Port of Zeebrugge and PSA are happy to announce that the ships in this service will be handled at the ZIP-terminal.

Silversea To Rename Expedition Ship

(Ft. Lauderdale, FL -- April 20, 2011) Ultra-luxury Silversea Cruises today announced plans to change the name of the Prince Albert II, its expedition ship, to Silver Explorer. The change will occur later this month while the vessel is in dry dock at the Lisnave shipyard in Setubal, Portugal, undergoing routine maintenance prior to commencing a summer program of Northern Europe and Arctic voyages. "Our expansion into adventure travel has turned out quite successful and we have to prepare for the possibility of adding more ships," said Manfredi Lefebvre, Silversea's chairman.

Silversea's New Flagship Arrives in America

Silversea Cruises' new flagship, Silver Spirit, arrived Jan. 19 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, completing her maiden crossing of the Atlantic, a 16-day voyage which began in Lisbon on January 3. The all-suite Silver Spirit will host several days of inaugural activities while in Fort Lauderdale, including an exclusive evening event on January 20 for guests sailing on the 91-day Grand Inaugural Voyage. In a first for the cruise company, the invitation-only Christening Ceremony taking place on January 21 will be broadcast live on the Silver Spirit Blog on the company's Internet site…

International Seakeepers Society Announces Megayacht Program

The International SeaKeepers Society will host a press conference on September 22 to introduce its new Yacht Builder Partnership Program, whose initial membership includes Oceanco, Feadship, Lürssen, Christensen Yachts, Delta Marine, Trinity Yachts and Benetti. Yacht builders can join SeaKeepers as Yacht Partners for a $25,000 fee and will work with the Society by introducing their clients to Society membership. In exchange, Yacht Partners use the SeaKeeper Partner logo in their advertising and marketing and participate in social functions. The partnership also encourages fellowship between yachtsmen.
