Rhode Island's Deepwater Wind will start installing the foundations for North America's first offshore wind farm on Monday, a milestone the company says could pave the way for an industry long established in Europe but that is still struggling with opposition in the United States. French Government Will Block Hasty Alstom Deal
France's Economy Minister Arnaud Montebourg confirmed for the first time on Sunday that both General Electric and Siemens were interested in engineering group Alstom and said he would not allow any hasty decisions. In a statement, he said he first learned of GE's interest on Thursday and then of Siemens' proposal earlier on Sunday. He said the government was ready to look at both proposals but "will not accept that a decision is taken, whatever it might be, in haste" and without knowledge of what was in the national interest and what alternatives there might be. Earlier, a spokeswoman said Montebourg was no longer expecting to meet GE chief executive Jeff Immelt on Sunday as government sources reported on Saturday. She said the meeting had been postponed "for a few days".
MAN Acquires Alstom Diesel Engine Ops
Engineering companies Alstom of France and MAN of Germany have agreed terms for the acquisition by MAN of ALSTOM's Diesel engines business. Through this acquisition, the MAN Group will strengthen its activities in the field of large Diesel engines. MAN B&W Diesel AG, Augsburg, will take over ALSTOM Engines Ltd. of the U.K. with its brands Ruston, Paxman and Mirrlees Blackstone. ALSTOM Engines Ltd. supplies on a worldwide scale medium and high speed Diesel and gas-fueled engines with outputs ranging from 500 kW to 15,000 kW, which are primarily incorporated into fast ferries, navy and coast guard ships, luxury yachts, locomotives, power stations and packaged generator sets.
