Cambodia Seeks Return of Ship Carrying Country's First Oil Output
The Cambodian government is seeking the return of an oil tanker and its crew who have been detained in Indonesia, alleging that the ship had loaded oil illegally from an offshore oil field, a government official said on Thursday.The Bahamas-flagged tanker MT Strovolos and its crew were detained in waters near the Anambas islands of Indonesia on July 27, the Indonesian Navy said in a statement.The vessel is carrying Cambodia's first-ever oil production from an offshore oil field which began operation in December 2020. However, the cargo has been stuck onboard the tanker since May as the project developer KrisEnergy entered liquidation in June after being unable to pay debts."I am worried," Cambodia's Ministry of Mines and Energy spokesman Cheap Suor said.

Pirates Rob Korean Bulk Carrier

Vessel Hijacked off Malaysia
The crew of the product tanker Orkim Victory was taken hostage after their vessel was hijacked by pirates eight nautical miles off the coast of Pu Aur, Malaysia, according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB)’s Piracy Reporting Centre. The tanker carrying petroleum was under way from Sungai Udang to Kuantan, Malaysia, when the 7,119 dwt vessel was boarded by armed men. The vessel was boarded in the South China Sea off Pulau Aur, Malaysia and had its oil cargo siphoned off. The attack was held east of Mersing, off Malaysia in the South China Sea. The armed group also damaged all communication equipment in Orkim Victory and stole the property of crew and ship.
Indonesia Restricts Foreign Vessels to Spur Local Shipbuilding
Indonesia will begin restricting foreign vessels transporting domestic aquaculture products in Indonesian waters to encourage growth for domestic shipbuilders from next year. The stricter fishing laws would spell the end of foreign fishing vessels plying Indonesian waters. This would in turn impact the fishery industry in several ASEAN countries which have partly depended on catch from Indonesian territorial waters. Indonesian Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said her country will not issue new licenses to foreign vessels after the current moratorium ends next month. The moratorium will end on 30 April. Indonesia doesn’t see that it should continue (with the moratorium). The country has already done verifications.

Dryad Maritime gives warning of increasing SE Asia piracy. The warning results from the release of their Q2 figures, containing data that shows the area experiences the highest number of maritime crime incidents in 2014 in comparison with other traditional piracy hot spots. The warning comes in the wake of the most recent hijack of a tanker, (MT Moresby 9), off the Anambas Islands on July 4. Pirates boarded the vessel, taking the crew hostage before stealing part of the 2,200-metric-ton cargo of Marine Gas Oil (MGO). The vessel location is still unknown.

Dryad Maritime informs it is warning of an increasing threat from Southeast Asia piracy following the release of their Q2 figures which show that the area continues to experience the highest number of maritime crime incidents in 2014 when compared to other traditional piracy hot spots. The warning comes in the wake of the most recent hijack of a tanker, (MT Moresby 9), off the Anambas Islands on 4th July, 2014, when pirates boarded the vessel taking the crew hostage before stealing part of the 2200 tonne cargo of Marine Gas Oil (MGO). ReCAAP Reports on Piracy in South China Sea
The ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre issued a special report addressing piracy in the South China Sea. Between January and June 2010, there have been eleven reported attacks by pirates against ships underway in water near the islands of Anambas, Natuna, and Mangkai. Tanker Crew Robbed in Latest Piracy Attack
According to a Sept. 24 report from United Press International, Asia, armed pirates boarded a tanker in the South China Sea, assaulted a crew member and robbed the rest of the crew. The six pirates were armed with knives and machetes as they boarded the Singapore-registered Prospect, the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) said.
