Nolan Tapped to Take Over as TOTE CEO
Tim Nolan has been named the next president and CEO of U.S. domestic ocean carrier TOTE Inc., parent company Saltchuk announced today. TOTE to Enter U.S.-Mainland-Hawaii Trade Route
Transportation and logistics company TOTE announced its intention to establish a new domestic shipping service to Hawaiâi. The company is working with Philly Shipyard to construct four new environmentally advanced containerships, custom built for the trade. This week began conversations to secure the new deep water Kapalama Container Terminal (KCT) in Honolulu for TOTE, a critical step in making the new service a reality. For more than 40 years, TOTE and its operating companies have provided dedicated service to Alaska and Puerto Rico. NASSCO Delivers Second LNG Containership

Chiarello, Cox and McKenna Named AOTOS Award Winners
The United Seamen's Service (USS) honored Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE Inc.; Matthew J. Cox, President and CEO of Matson; and James C. McKenna, President and CEO of Pacific Maritime Association with the 2015 Admiral of the Ocean Sea (AOTOS) Award. The maritime industry's most prestigious award was presented at the 46th annual gala held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, New York City, on November 13, 2015. US Shipowner Creates Fund for Families of Missing El Faro Crew

Search for El Faro Crew Continues, Hopes Fading
Responders continue the hunt for possible survivors from the missing cargo ship El Faro, which is believed to have sunk during Hurricane Joaquin. As of Tuesday night, crews have searched some 172,257 square nautical miles while scanning in the vicinity of the ship's last known position 35 nautical miles northeast of Crooked Islands, Bahamas, the Coast Guard reported. A decision on how much longer the search will continue could be announced on Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard said.

Deep seas may complicate efforts to find the sunken U.S. cargo ship lost off the Bahamas during Hurricane Joaquin, a federal safety investigator said, as a search and rescue mission for 32 missing crew stretched into a sixth day. A U.S. National Transportation Safety Board team arrived on Tuesday in Jacksonville, Florida, the port the El Faro departed from last week en route to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The ship disappeared in what maritime experts have called the worst cargo shipping disaster involving a U.S.-flagged vessel in more than 30 years.

Partnership represents the start of LNG adoption as a marine fuel in the United States. TOTEâs Marlin Class Ships Enter Next Build Phase
The arrival of the worldâs first dual-fuel slow-speed engine to General Dynamicsâ NASSCO Shipyard marks the next phase of construction for TOTEâs Marlin Class vessels, projected by TOTE to be the worldâs safest and cleanest containerships. Doosan Engine, under license from MAN Diesel and Turbo, delivered the first 8L70ME-GI engine. Earlier this year, Doosan completed the engineâs Factory Acceptance Tests, a culmination of months of testing to ensure compliance with U.S. regulations and restrictions.
New TOTE Containership Receives MAN Turbochargers
The 3,100-teu container ship ordered by American marine transportation company TOTE, will be powered by an all-MAN package including main engine, auxiliary engines and turbochargersâ¨. The recent delivery of the worldâs first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine from Doosan Engine to National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has set a new, historical milestone in engine technology, say MAN Diesel & Turbo. The 8L70ME-C8.2-GI main engine is aspirated by 2 × TCA66 turbochargers and in addition the ship will receive 3 × 9L28/32DF auxiliary engines, each featuring a single TCR18 turbocharger. A second, identical vessel is currently under construction.

Tips on Reducing Ship Operating Costs
While there are indications that the shipping industry is starting to emerge from the doldrums of the last six years, signals remain mixed. Moore Stephens reported in June that shipping confidence has risen to its highest point since 2010. Indeed, there are signs of a new wave of speculative ordering of new tonnage, propelled by bargain-basement prices from shipyards desperate to fill slots and a reported influx of capital from private equity sources. A primary driver for the surge of orders is the improvements in fuel efficiency of new ship designs over older ships.
TOTE, Saltchuk Secure Financing for Marlin Class Vessels
Today, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced a $324.6 million loan guarantee for TOTE Shipholdings and Saltchuk Resources for their Marlin Class vessels. The two new Marlin Class vessels, which will be the worldâs first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containerships, will serve the Puerto Rico trade and will be complete in 2015 and 2016. This financing is made available under the Title XI Loan Guarantee Program. TOTE and Saltchuk qualified for this loan as the new ship build is an advancement in shipbuilding technology and being constructed at a U.S. shipyard.
Sea Star Line, TOTE Leadership Changes
Effective January 1, 2014, Sea Star Line (SSL) President Peter Keller will become Executive Vice President of Sea Star Lineâs parent company, TOTE, Inc. In this new capacity he will assist in the oversight of both TOTE Shipholdings and the TOTE Maritime Division, which includes Sea Star Line and Totem Ocean Trailer Express (Totem Ocean). Keller joined TOTE in February of 2012 as President of Sea Star Line and has been leading the conversion of the companyâs fleet to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
