The Australian Maritime College (AMC), part of the University of Tasmania (UTAS), and the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives (IAMPE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreeing to work together on professional development for the maritime and port industry. Under the MOU, AMC and the IAMPE will acknowledge and endorse each other’s programs related to port and terminal education and training. The IAMPE will look to provide a professional certification as Marine Terminal Operator (MTO) to AMC undergraduate students for successfully completing the maritime undergraduate program. In addition, AMC is reviewing IAMPE programs for the granting of academic credit to graduate students in their new Maritime Business Administration in Maritime Management program.

KOTUG Training & Consultancy, the training and consultancy division of KOTUG, and AMC Search, the training and consultancy division of the Australian Maritime College (AMC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a long-term strategic partnership. The MoU encompasses exclusive training of (tug) masters, ships’ crews and pilots in Australia by certified KOTUG trainers at AMC’s training facilities in Tasmania.

Australian shipbuilder Norman R. Wright & Sons recently launched Reef Resilience, an Incat Crowther 24 patrol boat that will join Reef Ranger in protecting the Great Barrier Reef.Reef Resilience will service the southern region of the Reef from her home port in Gladstone, while Reef Ranger will continue to service the northern region from Cairns, meaning the entire reef will now benefit from the capability and operability this class of vessel offers. The vessel’s remit includes compliance monitoring, marine park and island national park management, diving and research operations.

Shipbuilder Strategic Marine has delivered a Fast Crew Boat (FCB) to offshore support vessel owner Centus Marine.The 40-meter vessel, named Centus Eight, was built in Singapore. According to Strategic Marine, during the sea trials the vessel achieved a top speed in excess of 30 knots.Th hull form was developed in collaboration with Strategic Marine’s design partner Southerly Designs in Australia and was tested at the Australian Maritime College.Designed to meet the specific requirements of Oil Majors, Centus Marine will the Centus Eight vessel in Malaysian waters.

Incat Crowther reports it has been chosen to design an aluminum patrol vessel for Queensland’s Department of Environment and Science. Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that Australia’s Department of Defence has awarded a contract to Naval Shipbuilding Institute (NSI), a joint venture between HII’s Technical Solutions division and Kellogg Brown and Root’s (KBR) Government Services division, to establish and manage Australia’s new Naval Shipbuilding College. This effort is in support of Australia’s mission to recapitalize its shipbuilding and maritime sustainment industry over the next several decades. Last week’s Nautical Institute London Command Seminar saw the appointment of Captain John Lloyd RD MBA FNI as the Institute’s new chief executive officer, succeeding Philip Wake OBE RD MSc FNI, who is retiring after 14 years in post. Australia and Japan have signed a cooperative research arrangement on marine hydrodynamics, the Chief Defence Scientist, Dr Alex Zelinsky, announced today. “This is the first joint defence research project to be conducted by our two countries,” Dr Zelinsky said. The collaborative research program will be undertaken by Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Group and Japan’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency. “This is an excellent start to our new relationship in defence science and technology cooperation,” Dr Zelinsky said. “Understanding hydrodynamics is vital for the future of Australia’s maritime defence and this collaboration will greatly benefit our technology development in this area.

The Australian Maritime College (AMC) has opted to extend its Long Term Simulator Support Program (LTSSP) with Kongsberg Maritime for a further five years. The LTSSP ensures that all Kongsberg Maritime simulators installed at AMC’s sites in Launceston and Perth are up-to-date and operating optimally. QinetiQ Maritime’s Paramarine ship and submersible design software has been selected by the Australian Maritime College (AMC) to use as part of their maritime engineering training program. The Australian Minister for Defense Materiel Mike Kelly announced the signing of a $21 million four-year contract with AMC Search Ltd to provide Pacific Patrol Boat (PPB) training services. Dr. Kelly said AMC Search Ltd (AMCS) is the commercial arm of the Australian Maritime College, located in Launceston, Tasmania. “The contract is for a range of technical, operational and administration courses for students from the 11 nations participating in the PPB Program,” Dr. Kelly said. “An annual suite of 16 separate training programs are to be delivered in Launceston. “Courses will range in duration from 10 days to 12 weeks and AMCS will also deliver some training in individual countries. “It is anticipated that approximately 140 – 160 students will undertake training each year.

Research by CSIRO & Australian Maritime College estimates that about 30% NOX and 20% SOX harmful emissions emanate from shipping. The authors of a recent research paper, Dr Ian Galbally from CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, and the Australian Maritime College’s Dr Laurie Goldsworthy estimate that approximately 30 per cent of anthropogenic nitrogen oxide emissions and 20 per cent of oxides of sulphur emissions generated in the Australian region may come from shipping. Germanischer Lloyd has appointed Nikeel Idnani as Business Development Manager for the Area Middle East / Africa, based in Dubai. Idnani has been in Dubai for eight years and brings with him Sales and Marketing experience from the ship repair, ship building and design industries. While at the Australian Maritime College, Idnani stood first in the Advance Diploma of Marine Engineering, which he completed in July 2000. He was also awarded the Royal Australian Navy Prize for best achievement by a student in the Chief Engineer course.

An installation of Transas GMDSS Simulator TGS 5000 has been completed in the Australian Maritime College (Launceston). Supplied, installed and supported by Transas partner Electrotech Australia, the system provides flexible teaching arrangements for classes of up to 24 students through the utilisation of two instructor stations interfaced to fifteen student stations. The system is remotely supported through VPN access, minimising travel costs for maintenance and upgrades. The system is capable of simulating a comprehensive range of GMDSS equipment, including Sailor 5000 and earlier versions.

Austal employee, Byron Walpole, was presented with the Australian Industry and Defence Network (AIDN) 2011 National Young Achiever of the Year Award at a defence industry ceremony held in Canberra this week. Owned and run by the Australian Maritime College (AMC), the new facility is ideally positioned to serve the growing Western Australia oil & gas business from its centre in Perth. The Australian Maritime College (AMC) is establishing a second AMC DP Unit following the successful first year of operation of Australia’s first accredited DP training facility at AMC’s Launceston, Tasmania, campus. The new AMC DP Unit will be located in Northbridge, Perth, and the inaugural course is scheduled for 15-19 November, 2010. AMC hopes that a Perth based DP facility will be a more convenient location than Tasmania for many potential trainees who work in the burgeoning offshore oil and gas industry in Western Australia. Also, AMC has a strategy to build a stronger presence in Western Australia generally, and the new DP Unit is likely to be just the first of similar moves by AMC over the next couple of years.
