Q&A: Ballast Water Management Market Matures

Since the ballast water management system discussion started nearly two decades ago, a clear concern was the ability to fit new equipment on existing ships, placing a strain on both space and power. Last month we caught up with a few key suppliers to for their insights on market development.How many BWMS have you sold and installed to date?Maxime Dedeurwaerder, BIO-UV GroupLast year has proven to be the best on record, with roughly 200 BIO-Sea units delivered. Scorpio Tankers Awards BWMS Retrofit Contract

Choice Ballast Solutions Chosen for Scorpio Tanker Retrofits

Choice Ballast Solutions was recently contracted by Scorpio Ship Management S.A.M., as agent for certain vessel-owning subsidiaries of Scorpio Tankers Inc. to provide engineering and project management to retrofit the Ecochlor ballast water management system (BWMS) on 12 of their vessels. Richard Mueller Named Fellow by SNAME

NETSCo president and CEO Richard A. Mueller has been nominated by his peers and approved by the Fellows Committee to be elevated to Fellow membership in the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). Mueller has been a SNAME member for more than 39 years and has held various elected positions including four terms as Chairman for the Great Lakes/Great Rivers Section, F.V.P. of Planning/Public Policy and he currently serves as the Functional Vice President of Membership as well as on the Council and the Executive Committee.

Choice Ballast Solutions (Choice), a provider of ballast water treatment planning, installation and compliance, has hired Debra DiCianna as Senior Compliance Engineer. DiCianna’s career in the maritime industry spans over 25 years with extensive experience in the compliance and operational issues of shipowners and the design/performance of ballast water management systems. In her role at Choice, DiCianna will be responsible for assisting clients, both shipowners and ballast water treatment manufacturers, in all matters concerning BWMS planning, installation and compliance.

‘Choice Alliance’ Formed to Serve BWT Market

A strategic alliance between Choice Ballast Solutions and Drew Marine has been formed to provide vertically integrated capabilities within the ballast water treatment (BWT) market. The two firms have joined to form “Choice Alliance” which will provide ship owners with -BWT compliance planning, integration engineering, project management, fabrication, installation, compliance assessment and service. Choice Alliance will also develop additional resources as sub-contractors to support necessary activities in the BWT industry. Choice Ballast Solutions specializes in the application, installation and project management of all types of ballast water treatment systems for both new-build and retrofit vessels.

Dooley Named President at Choice Ballast

Richard A. Mueller named John P. Dooley President of Choice Ballast Solutions, LLC. Working in close cooperation with ballast water systems suppliers and vessel owners, Dooley will be responsible for the overall management of the Choice commercial marine business activities, providing ballast water treatment systems integration from survey to signoff. Choice services include surveys, engineering, drawings, project management, equipment commissioning and startup and service. He will be located in Cleveland, Ohio and report directly to Mueller, CEO of Choice.

Netsco Forms Choice Ballast Solutions

Rich Mueller, President and CEO of Netsco, a company in marine engineering and naval architecture firm since 1984, has established Choice Ballast Solutions, LLC (Choice) to provide additional engineering and service capacity. Choice offers shipowners assistance with selection, engineering and installation of ballast water management systems. Choice services include surveys, engineering, drawings, project management, equipment commissioning and startup and service. Choice said it recognizes that the ballast water treatment market is stalled due to structural constraints, (lack of equipment type approval from the U.S. Coast Guard and/or ratification of the 2004 Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) Convention).
