Houston Welcomes Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line returned to Houston on Saturday, October 11. Its Norwegian Jewel arrived at the Bayport Cruise Terminal in Pasadena, Texas. This inaugural call marked the beginning of the 2014 Fall Cruise Season for the Port of Houston Authority, as it celebrates the centennial year of the Houston Ship Channel. During a ceremony onboard, Norwegian Jewel's Captain Kenneth Harstrom tipped his new cowboy hat to the great state of Texas, as he welcomed officials from the Port Commission, including Chairman Janiece Longoria and Port Commissioners Clyde Fitzgerald and John Kennedy. "We are excited about the impact Norwegian Jewel will bring to the city of Pasadena and the greater Houston region.

Abrupt Change of Command at Port of Houston

Colonel Leonard Waterworth, Executive Director of the Port of Houston Authority announced today that he is stepping down as its Executive Director, effective January 31, 2014. Roger Guenther, Deputy Executive Director of Operations, will take over as the Port Authority's Executive Director. Waterworth advised the Port Commission that he had accepted the role for two years, to help the Port Authority through recent transitions and to use his U.S. Army Corps of Engineers background to help obtain permits to deepen and widen the Port Authority's container terminal channels.

Princess Cruises' new service from the Port of Houston Authority's Bayport Cruise Terminal in Pasadena, Texas, kicks off with a four-day benefit cruise aboard 'Caribbean Princess' to Progreso, Mexico. About 2,000 passengers supported "Cruising for a Cause" and the first-ever fundraising cruise is expected to raise up to $1 million for two U.S. military veterans' organizations: the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Operation Homefront. After this first voyage, to conclude on 9, November, 2013, Caribbean Princess is scheduled to begin, with a total of 27 sailings from the Houston terminal.

PHA Signs Memorandum of Friendship & Trade Cooperation With Port of Marseille-Fos, Provence Promotion Economic Development Agency. Finances are very strong for August, Executive Director Len Waterworth shared in his report to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority at its monthly meeting today. "I am very pleased to announce that we had another $20 million+ month, that's four out of eight this year, extremely good," Waterworth said. Waterworth also reported August's net income of $11 million, up $7 million or 212 percent.

Dredging Funds Approved by Port Commission

In a special meeting held in Houston yesterday, August 5, the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority approved $296,000 in increased funding for maintenance dredging of the Bayport Cruise Terminal. The special meeting was held to amend the Memorandum of Agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the maintenance dredging of the Bayport Cruise and Container Terminal berths. Port of Houston, Princess Cruises Lock Two More Seasons

The Port of Houston Authority reached an agreement with Princess Cruises to make passenger calls for two additional cruise seasons, in addition to the sailings that will kick off later this year in November at the state-of-the-art Bayport Cruise Terminal. The agreement, which was approved by the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority today, calls for Princess Cruises to sail from the Bayport Cruise Terminal in Pasadena, Texas, during the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 cruise seasons. Sailings are expected to generate as much as $155 million of economic impact over the confirmed three cruise seasons, according to the firm Martin Associates. An estimated $3 million in state and local taxes is anticipated. Additionally, a total of 736 direct, induced and indirect jobs will be created.

The third annual Maritime Youth Expo will be held at the Port of Houston's Bayport Cruise Terminal, Saturday 6, April 2013. Hundreds of area high school maritime students and Sea Scouts will have the opportunity to hear mariners talk about opportunities on tow boats, harbor tugs and barges, learn about maritime salvage and see salvor equipment in action, and watch state-of-the-art Coast Guard helicopters and small boats perform on-water demonstrations. PoH: Upward Trend Continues in Financial Results

The Port of Houston Authority will partner with Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines to offer new services from the Bayport Cruise Terminal, it was announced at the Nov. 15 Port Commission meeting. Princess Cruises will make passenger cruise calls during the 2013-2014 cruise season, while Norwegian Cruise Lines has committed to three years and will begin service in 2014. This will result in a $200 million economic impact to the communities within the greater Houston region over this four-year period.

The Port of Houston Authority is partnering with two separate cruise lines, Princess Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Lines, to offer new service from the Bayport Cruise Terminal. Princess Cruises will make passenger cruise calls during the 2013-2014 cruise season, while Norwegian Cruise Lines has committed to begin service in 2014. The Port of Houston Authority partners with two cruise lines, PrincessCruises & Norwegian Cruise Lines, to use Bayport Cruise Terminal. Princess Cruises will make passenger cruise calls during the 2013-2014 cruise season, while Norwegian Cruise Lines has committed to begin service in 2014. The Port Commission authorized entering into agreements with both lines after meeting in executive session. The Port Authority's agreement with the lines is significant. including the cities of Houston and Pasadena. Smaller cities near the cruise terminal are also expected to benefit.

Port Approves Nearly $15M in New Contracts

Houston port commissioners approved about $15m in new contracts for the Bayport container terminal, mostly for dredging to accommodate larger vessels. That $12.8m contract went to Orion Construction. The job includes dredging to the east and west of the wharves and construction of new mooring points. The Port of Houston Authority Commission also approved a $1.25m change order to an existing Orion dredging contract for the Bayport cruise terminal. Orion requested the additional money after encountering tires and debris in the dredge area, which complicated the job, port officials said. The first phase of the cruise terminal, which is under construction, is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008. The first phase of the container terminal opened earlier this year.

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority (PHA) will consider $1.4m in contracts and projects for the Bayport container and cruise terminals to permit it to meet future demands -- including a new 50-acre container yard -- that will require heavy-capacity forklift and yard tractors. Among the considerations are: a change order to McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. for Bayport Terminal Complex Phase 1 Container Yard -- Stage 1 for $186,929; a change order to Morganti Texas, Inc., for Bayport Cruise Terminal Complex -- Phase 1 Terminal Building for $180,938; a $68,000 increase in the professional services contract to Lockwood Andrews and Newnam, Inc.
