MV Charlie delivered to dship; Fourth "Eco-friendly" Newbuild

The quartet of new ships enhances dship's capabilities in the multi-purpose heavy lift market during a time when cargo slots are rare and the market is tight.dship ordered the four eco-friendly F-500 multipurpose heavy lift vessels—MV Mick, MV Keith, MV Ronnie and MV Charlie—as part of its fleetexpansion program initiated back in 2018. All ships were developed to reduce fuel consumption while increasing stowage flexibility.

KCC to Install Becker-Mewis Ducts Across Its Fleet

Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) and Becker-Marine Systems have finalized an agreement for a fleet wide rollout of the Becker-Mewis Duct. The tailored hull appendix is designed to improve the hydrodynamics of the flow into the ship’s propeller, thereby increasing propulsion efficiency and reducing fuel consumption at sea.Initial findings from model tank studies, CFD calculations and operational feedback from pilot vessel Banastar have provided confidence the system will firmly contribute to KCC’s targets of further reducing CO2 emissions and fuel cost savings…

Lydia Oldendorff Sets Record

The largest German bulk carrier company Oldendorff Carriers GmbH, which operates around 700 ships, said that its Lydia Oldendorff (207,562 tdw built 2015) has set a record as the largest vessel to load coal at Puerto Bolivar, Colombia.The Newcastlemax vessel has a length of 300 meters and a breadth of 50 meters and was loaded on a trial cargo draft of 17.5 meters. Becker Intros New Sail Tech

Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems is now taking another step forward – wind operated vessels."We will see different hybrid systems on board vessels in the future. There will be ships and services where sailing provides a real option for supporting propulsion," said Henning Kuhlmann, Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems.Becker is developing a highly efficient wing sail, which will generate significant forward thrust on commercial vessels. Becker Marine Systems Eyes Growth in Asia

Becker Marine Systems says it is continuing its successful entry into Asian countries such as China, Japan and South Korea, despite an ongoing crisis in the shipbuilding industry. Now the Hamburg-based company is opening a branch office in Kobe, Japan, and has formed a manufacturing partnership with Murakami Iron Works for producing containership rudders. Becker Marine Systems has had a presence in the Asian maritime industry for decades. Recently the company delivered the largest flap rudder in the world.

New Appointments at Becker Marine Systems USA

Becker Marine Systems USA continues growth in North America. Becker Marine Systems, the leader in rudder technology and the inventor of the Becker Mewis Duct Energy-Saving Device has added Brian Rhoades and Adam Wood to their USA staff. Mr. Rhoades will have the role of Northeast Sales Representative and will be based in Pennsylvania. A Kings Point graduate, he brings 30 years of experience to the role and will support Becker customers in Eastern Canada and the US. Mr. Wood joins Becker after a US Navy Nuclear Engineering career and holds a BS degree in Applied Sciences.Adam will serve as Field Service Engineer supporting domestic and Global customer projects working from Becker Marine Systems new North America Headquarters based in the Houston area in Webster, Texas.

1,000th Becker Mewis Duct to Be Presented at Nor-Shipping

Hamburg-based Becker Marine Systems will present its 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct in Oslo at Nor-Shipping 2015. The use of all ducts previously delivered will have lowered CO2 by more than 1.4 million metric tons. The Becker Mewis Duct has not been a successful product for Becker Marine Systems alone, the company said. It is also contributing towards the global objective of enhanced sustainability in the shipping industry. The Becker Twisted Fin is also being presented at the trade fair.

Becker Marine Delivers Rudder for Largest Containership

At 19,000 TEU, the largest container ship in the world is now picking up speed – with a high-performance rudder from the Hamburg-based company. The christening of the CSCL GLOBE containership from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) at the end of November drew a great deal of attention in the shipping industry, because, with space for 19,000 standard containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), it is the largest one in the world. The rudder for the ship built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in South Korea was delivered by Becker Marine Systems.

Becker Mewis Duct Claims Massive CO2 Reduction

Golden Becker Mewis Duct at SMM 2014 claims its top-selling product has already cut CO2 by 900,000 tonnes to date. A golden Becker Mewis Duct with a large '750“ in the middle will be one of SMM 2014’s “head-turners” says the manufacturer. “This is how we are celebrating the 750th unit of our top-selling product,” said Dirk Lehmann, Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems. More than 800 units of the highly efficient nozzle for reducing energy consumption have now been sold. According to Lehmann, “All of the nozzles delivered thus far have already been able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 900,000 tonnes.“ The million tonne CO2 mark is projected to be exceeded this year.

ASRY Repair Updates

ASRY issued a statement detailing the yard's recent operational and business developments. After appointing Resolute Maritime Services as the agents in Greece an increased activity from Greek market can be observed at ASRY including one of the leading owners from Greece, Maran Tankers Management, sending their VLCC for docking in ASRY. Apart from routine drydocking jobs and hull treatment the main job was the installation of owner-supplied Becker Mewis Duct. This is the 12th duct ASRY has installed, and second on a VLCC, which only required a record 10 days for complete installation, proving their proficiency in that field. Becker Rudders for Five Container Giants

Despite the ongoing shipping crisis, Becker Marine Systems said it is on course for 2013. The Hamburg-based company was awarded the contract to equip five 18,000-TEU container ships under construction for China Shipping Container Lines with effective high performance rudders. With a transport capacity of 18,000 standard containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), the container ships currently under construction for China Shipping Container Lines at the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea will be among the largest cargo ships in the world.

Becker Mewis Duct: The Largest Ever Built

Becker delivered an eight-meter-diameter version of its prime energy saver for VLCC Becker Marine Systems has delivered the largest Becker Mewis Duct ever made with a diameter of 8.10 m for the construction of Very Large Crude Oil Carriers (VLCC) at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for Samco Shipholding, Singapore. Initial sea trials of the new VLCC with a length of 319.0 m have proven once more the excellent rate of power savings provided by the Becker Mewis Duct. Fuel savings of about 5% were measured, lowering operating costs for the lifetime of the ship.
