Miami-Dade County has given the green light for construction to begin on the sleek new terminal for Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) terminal, designed by Miami-based architecture firm Bermello Ajamil & Partners. The county will invest up to USD 100mln to build 166,000-square-foot terminal at PortMiami, augmented by funds coming from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. Commissioners also agreed to advance project costs not to exceed an additional $65m. The terminal will be able to accommodate ships with up to 5,000 passengers, feature indoor and outdoor waiting areas, faster embarkation and disembarkation technology, expedited security screening and include a new parking garage, a valet area and lounge.

The Mumbai Port, one of the oldest in India, will be investing Rs 225 crore ($33.68) to build a modern passenger terminal that can cater to cruise ships, reports PTI. "We have identified cruise shipping as a focus area, which can help the city as well. We will soon be floating tenders for a passenger terminal which will be built on a PPP model," Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) chairman Sanjay Bhatia said. Work on the terminal, which will resemble an airport and have the capacity to handle thousands of passengers disembarking from a single ship, will be over in next two years, he said. Meanwhile, the ministry of shipping has appointed an international consultant — Bermello Ajamil & Partners — to prepare an economically viable plan to develop coastal and inland cruise ports in the country.

Port Everglades will begin the renovation for its sixth cruise terminal in five years this spring as Terminal 4 is modernized through an expansion and reconfiguration effort that will provide the cruise line industry with a modern dual flow facility just in time for the 2014/2015 cruise season. In addition, the adjacent Slip 2 will be extended by 250 feet for a total 1,150 feet of berth length to accommodate larger cruise ships calling at Port Everglades. The Slip 2 extension is slated for completion by the end of 2016.

The Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) Council approved $16.5 million in allocations to Port Everglades to lengthen a cruise berth and to extend the port’s Southport Turning Notch to allow for more cargo berths. These allocations, which were approved under two different state funding sources, will become part of the Florida Department of Transportation  (FDOT) 2014/15 Work Program that comes before the Florida Legislature for approval this next legislative session.

The American Association of Port Authorities’ (AAPA) 2013 Cruise Seminar in San Francisco, April 24-26, will kick off with a candid look inside the cruise industry from the perspective of four key cruise line executives and end with a tour of the Port of San Francisco to see the impact of the America’s Cup on port operations. TEAM was recently contracted by Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to design, manufacture and deliver three Passenger Boarding Bridges for the International Cruise Terminal in Singapore, currently in construction. The contract is a result of a competitive tender process for which TEAM partnered up with leading services specialist Singapore Technologies Synthesis Pte Ltd. (ST Synthesis). The contract calls for the delivery of three PBBs in November 2011 and the option for delivery of a fourth PBB in 2012.

To accommodate rapid growth in the North American passenger cruise industry, U.S. ports are facing potential expenditures of $150-300 million to meet existing Federal regulations for cruise facility design and space. That’s the conclusion of a study launched this year by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), with the results unveiled at AAPA’s annual convention in Curaçao. AAPA initiated the study to address cruise ports’ pressing concerns over elaborate, cumbersome, costly and duplicative Federal requirements. The association retained the services of Bermello, Ajamil & Partners, experts in facility design. to conduct the study and recommend solutions.
