The May announcement that W&O Supply had been named as the exclusive distributor of Hyde Marine’s GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment Systems (BWT) in the U.S. and Canada may seem like routine news. After all, W&O Supply is one of the world’s largest marine suppliers and has many such agreements in place, covering a wide range of equipment. This agreement, however, comes in advance of Ballast Water Treatment deadlines looming large in the porthole. It also lays out the blueprint for owners and operators to move forward on the complicated process of achieving regulatory compliance with both Coast Guard and IMO mandates. Florida-based W&O will begin selling Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS effective immediately.

Military Sealift Command's (MSC) joint high-speed vessel, USNS 'Spearhead' visits the Port of St. Petersburg, FLA. U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young, Mayor Bill Foster and other distinguished visitors from St. Petersburg joined Navy Chief of Information Rear Adm. John Kirby, Capt. Sam Norton, commander, MSC Atlantic, and Capt. Doug Casavant, the ship's civil service master, during an arrival ceremony in honor of the ship, its crew and the Navy. The three-day port call is primarily a working visit and an opportunity for senior officials and military personnel from U.S. Central Command and U.S.

The Navy's first Joint High-Speed Vessel, USNS Spearhead (JHSV 1), is scheduled to visit the Port of St. Petersburg beginning Sunday, Feb. 10. The ship will remain in port until its departure Tuesday afternoon. The port call is primarily a working visit and an opportunity for senior officials and military personnel from U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command to visit the ship and receive short briefings on Spearhead's capabilities. Built in Mobile, Ala., by Austal U.S.A., USNS Spearhead is designed for rapid, intra-theater transport of troops and military equipment.

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education, welfare and morale of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced that its 17th Annual Tribute to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Seventh District will take place on Monday, November 1, 2010. The event will honor the work of the men and women of the Coast Guard’s Seventh District who deployed to Haiti and aided in the relief efforts associated with the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the country in January of this year. Industrial Power Systems, Inc. (IPS) announced the retirement of Jerry Steinberg, after almost 16 years with the company as its Vice President – Sales & Marketing. Jerry is being replaced by Michael Phelan as its new Director of Sales & Marketing. Jerry graduated from the University of Illinois in 1961, and immediately after graduation joined Cummins Engine Co., where he had several domestic positions in Columbus, Indiana before moving into their International Sales organization with time living in both London, England and Sao Paulo, Brazil. This was followed by a number of years with Waukesha Engine, ending as their VP – Sales & Marketing. Jerry then had a number of years in the distribution business, working with both Power Equipment Inc. in Ohio and Reagan Equipment Co. in Florida.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta, marking a significant milestone in the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) ongoing port security efforts, today announced the award of $92.3 million in grants to 51 ports located throughout the nation to enhance the security of ports and other facilities. "Protecting seaports and port facilities against the threat of terrorism is imperative," said Secretary Mineta. At a press conference near New York City's Staten Island Ferry, the Secretary was joined by New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Port Authority of New York & New Jersey Vice Chairman Charles Gargano, as well as a host of federal representatives including Rep. Bill Young (FL), U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thomas Collins and U.S.

The Secretary will be joined in making the announcement today by Congressman Bill Young (FL), U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thomas H. Collins, U.S. Maritime Administrator William Schubert, Rear Admiral Richard E. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Joseph J. Seymour, Executive Director, and Charles A. Authority of New York and New Jersey. The announcement will take place at 2:00, p.m., at Battery Park in New York. Congress provided funding for the grant program to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for security in all modes of transportation.
