Marine and coastal environment specialists, BMT Oceanica (BMT), a subsidiary of BMT Group Ltd, has commenced its latest project with Pluton Resources Ltd (Pluton) to increase knowledge of marine fauna around the Irvine and Cockatoo Islands off the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. The collection of marine fauna data will assist Pluton to meet their environmental approvals requirements for any expansion plans of mining operations on Cockatoo Island and the possible infrastructure development of iron ore mining on Irvine Island.

Against a background of rising claims costs, the UK P&I Club has issued guidelines to its owners about P&I cover for laid-up ships to help them prepare and maintain their vessels − and a comprehensive note on the return of calls. The Club is keen to minimize claims for personal injury, wreck removal, pollution, anti-fouling, environmental contamination and damage to other vessels, underwater cables, beaches and reefs. The note points out that crew claims frequently add up to greater total costs than cargo claims. A decade back, cargo claims generally cost more than crew claims. Given the rising cost of the latter, it would be illogical to base P&I call returns solely on the absence of cargo.

The UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) Defense Equipment and Services has commissioned Gifford, BMT Marine Projects Ltd, and Fleet Support Limited to produce a new Dry Dock Code of Practice. Clearly focused on the goal of safe dry-docking, the Code is aimed at the MoD, shipyards and other military and civil organizations involved in the dry docking of mono-hulled surface ships of over 500 tons. The Code provides a comprehensive and methodical framework for ship and dock owners and operators to review, and if appropriate further develop, the procedures and measures required for a safe dry docking. Although not prescriptive or intended for direct application, the Code provides a valuable framework for the development of safe in-house procedures. The ship is suitable to be dry-docked.
