Generale de Manutention Portuaire (GMP), a joint venture between Dubai-based trade enabler DP World and French shipping line CMA CGM, has been awarded the service concession for the construction and operation of berths 11 and 12 at Port 2000 in Le Havre.According to a press release from the French port, the terminals of Port 2000 In Le Havre are trade-enabling gateways for cargo entering the French consumer markets. Germany’s largest universal port is again on a growth path, achieving a distinct advance in the first quarter of 2019 with seaborne cargo throughput ahead by 6.0 percent at 34.6 million tons.Both general cargo throughput at 23.9 million tons - up 5.4 percent- and bulk cargo throughput at 10.7 million tons - up 7.5 percent – rose substantially in the first three months.The gratifying 6.4 percent increase in container handling to 2.3 million TEU is primarily attributable to four liner services new to Hamburg and linking the Hanseatic City with ports in the USA, Canada and Mexico.A total 121,000 TEU for container transport with the USA represented an almost fourfold jump, catapulting the USA into second place among Hamburg’s top trading partners on container traffic.

The Freeport of Riga in Latvia has announced that it has signed a cooperation agreement with the Port of Qingdao in China, one of the ten busiest ports in the world.According to a statement, the goal of the agreement is to facilitate trading, logistics and business partnerships between Latvia and China, boosting the exchange of information and expertise in the fields of port planning and development, port management and information technologies.“Last autumn, we transported cargo by rail directly from the City of Xi'an to the Port of Riga. Miriam Maes has been appointed Chair of the Supervisory Board of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, in accordance with a decision made by the supervisory directors. ​Practical training on board ships for port State control officers, supported by class-based lectures, has boosted knowledge amongst participants from eight countries during a training course in Muscat and Sohar, Oman (19 February -2 March). The course was hosted by the Riyadh Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control in the Gulf Region (Riyadh MoU) and  jointly organized by International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Tokyo MoU, the Riyadh MoU and the Ministry of Transport of Oman. The focus of the course was on port State control procedures and the latest revisions to relevant IMO conventions, specifically the SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Lines and STCW treaties.
