Dick Bollinger Passes Away
Dick Bollinger — President Emeritus of Bollinger Shipyards-- died at home surrounded by his loving family. Richard N. Bollinger died at home on January 17, 2012 of natural causes. He was President of Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. from his graduation from LSU in mechanical engineering in 1950 until his retirement in 2003, and remained President Emeritus and Director Emeritus of the company until his death. During his time with Bollinger, he performed almost every job in the shipyard, including lofting, welding, designing and marine engineering.
NOAA, Navy Raise Turret of USS Monitor
NOAA and the U.S. Navy have succeeded in raising the world’s first armored revolving gun turret from the wreck of the famous Civil War ironclad USS Monitor, which rests below 240 feet of water 16 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Also recovered today were the vessel’s two large Dahlgren cannons. Yesterday’s retrieval of the turret and cannons marks the end of a multi-year effort by NOAA, the Navy and The Mariners’ Museum to preserve key components of the revolutionary ship before sea water corrodes the vessel beyond recognition. The turret, with the cannons inside, was hoisted from the sea floor by a 500-ton crane aboard the Derrick Barge Wotan, owned and operated by Manson Gulf Industries.
Rigdon Marine Christens First 4000 Class PSV
Rigdon Marine Corporation (RMC) announced two recent milestones in its Rigdon 4000 Class platform support vessel (PVS) construction program. On June 22, 2007, Bobbie Bennett, wife of RMC’s first Captain and offshore employee, Roland Bennett, christened the First and Ten at Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, La. In attendance were Chris Bollinger and Ben Bordelon, senior executives in charge of Bollinger’s New Construction and Repair divisions respectively, Larry and Jan Rigdon, and a large representation of RMC shorebase and offshore teams, along with many of their spouses. On Thursday, June 7, 2007, the company’s second Rigdon 4000 Class platform support vessel (PVS) was launched by Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, Louisiana.
