Triton’s Yacht-based Submersible to Debut in Monaco

New lightweight, low profile Triton 1000/3 LP designed specifically to fit into existing yacht tender garages. Triton Submarines (Triton) announced that it will introduce its newest model, the Triton 1000/3 LP (Low Profile) at the 2014 Monaco Yacht show September 24-27. Triton’s model line now includes eleven models configured for two to eight passengers with depth ratings from 1,000 feet (305 meters) to 5,500 feet (1,675 meters) as well as the full ocean depth rated Triton 36000/3. Yacht-based submersibles continue to gain popularity in the yachting community.

Coast Guard Detains Motor Vessel

The U.S. Coast Guard detained motor vessel Stargold Trader to its berth in Portland, Ore., Wednesday, until the safety deficiencies found onboard are corrected by the vessel’s crew. Port State Control officers from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Portland, discovered the discrepancies during a routine inspection of the 618-foot Panamanian flagged vessel. A majority of the safety discrepancies were related to fire hazards, which included excessive oil leaks within engine room machinery and disrepair of the vessel’s primary firefighting system.

Unlit Loaded Barge Set Adrift in Columbia River

Coast Guard Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Ore., received a call from personnel at the Tidewater Barge facility informing them that one of their loaded grain barges was missing from the Hayden Island staging area between Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash. Crewmembers of the Lori B, a passing tug, came upon the 42-foot wide and 252-foot long barge floating near the navigation channel and towed it to back to the staging area. Crews from the Lori B and another tug, Outlaw, inspected the other two staging areas and confirmed all other barges remained securely moored. The Tidewater Barge employee who made the initial report indicated that the mooring cable for the barge was not cut, but the ratchets used to hold it in place appeared to have been intentionally loosened.

Maltese Freighter Captain Pleads Guilty in U.S. Federal Court

The United States Attorney’s Office, District of Oregon, announced that the Vessel Master of the Adfines East plead guilty to operating a commercial vessel under the influence of alcohol in the Port of Portland. Valeriy Sharykin, 62, a Russian citizen, and captain of a Maltese freighter plead guilty before U.S. Magistrate John V. Acosta. Defendant Sharykin was charged by information with negligent operation of a commercial vessel, a class A misdemeanor. Sharykin was the licensed Vessel Master on the Adfines East, a 602 foot commercial vessel, weighing over 24,000 gross tons and sailing under the flag of Malta. USCG Tests Emergency Tow System

The Coast Guard, along with members of the local commercial fishing and tugboat industry, tested Thirteenth Coast Guard District’s new Emergency Towing System recently. The ETS is a pre-staged package of equipment that would be delivered to a disabled vessel requiring assistance. The kit can be deployed from a tugboat or helicopter and consists of a lightweight high performance towline, a messenger line used in deploying the towline, a lighted buoy, and chafing gear. The ETS program came into existence following the near grounding of the motor vessel Salica Frigo on March 9, 2007 in Unalaska Bay, Alaska, but this test exercise marked the beginning of its use in the waters of Washington and Oregon.

USCG: Ship Captain Fails Breathalyzer Test

Freighter captain taken into custody by Coast Guard in Astoria, Ore. The captain of a Maltese freighter was taken into custody by Coast Guard officials in Astoria, Tuesday. The captain of the 738-foot motor vessel Laconia was taken into custody after his blood-alcohol level was found to be in excess of the legal limit for commercial vessel operators. A Coast Guard Vessel Boarding and Safety Team from Sector Columbia River in Warrenton, Ore., boarded the vessel and immediately received a report from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents already aboard the vessel for a Customs inspection. The CBP members suspected the man was intoxicated based on their observations while aboard, including open containers of alcohol in the Captain's stateroom.

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard is coordinating actions to protect the Oregon Coast from any threat posed by the 648-foot, Singapore-flagged car-carrier Morning Spruce that lost all power and was adrift in 12-foot seas, for approximately 4 ½ hours, southwest of the Columbia River entrance Sunday. At approximately 3:30 p.m., Sunday, the Morning Spruce’s engineer was able to restore the ship’s power. The Coast Guard has directed the Morning Spruce to remain offshore until repairs to the ship have been verified.
